I think this is the only letter we have from Will to Margaret, though he would have written several to her because he travelled so much for the Army, as he was doing when he wrote this letter.

Dear Kiddie,
There was nothing about the trip so far that you would have enjoyed as it has been so hot. The people up here say it is hot, so I guess it is. I think I got sunburned (to mortal sense) coming up. I sat in the sun about ten minutes and I guess that did the work. I arrived here about 4:30.
I have just had my dinner, after making arrangements to start tomorrow morning. My dinner did not come up to my lunch although it was very good for a country hotel. The lunch was a regular surprise party. You were certainly a dear girl to rustle such a lunch so early in the morning. I have been wondering if the Montgomery’s had any chicken yesterday. I couldn’t make out what they had unless one of them had a wing and the other the neck.
There is a Wild West show in town - “Kit Carson’s” I think it is, I may take it in if it is not too expensive. It is too hot in here to write a long letter so I know my cutie will let me off with a short one. I didn’t write on the train because I didn’t believe you would get a letter mailed down the road any sooner than you will get this.
I slept about an hour in installments of about three minutes each. I bough a nickel’s worth of figs and a nickel’s worth of grapes after lunch and ate about half of each.
I hope you will not be too blue tonight. You can cheer yourself up thinking I am on my way back, even if I am not making great speed.
Error has been informing me all afternoon that I have a headache. It has informed me that it is not as bad as it was. It is too hot to work on it.
It is 8:35 now (a quarter to nine by your time) so that I guess I will not see the show. I am going out to walk around a little before retiring. I think we will reach Colusa sometime Thursday. That is where you had better send your Tuesday and Wednesday letters. I think your Thursday letter should go to Knight’s and your Friday letter to Sacramento.
Don’t forget your practising Kiddie. If Mrs. Montgomery could demonstrate clothes for Jane, I know you can do it for Jack.
Affectionately,
also,
with love, kisses, and spiritual sundaes,
Will
P.S. There are too many people around to send the other kind. Here is a little one put on by hand.

I'll always wonder if Will's talk of his headache was meant to encourage Margaret to tell him if she had a headache. I figure she was about five months pregnant at the time.

Spirited sundaes? Or spirited something else? I can't figure it out. Maybe it's an in-joke between Will and Margaret.
