Sunday Night 9 P.M.
Dear Alma,
Will and Kathleen have gone to the train to take Pickle as she is going to Savannah to stay a few weeks. Miss Mainestone [???] is visiting her brother and returns to her home in Savannah tonight. The family - the brother and his wife and the sister took dinner with us last night. We had an excellent dinner and a good time generally. Both of the ladies had bobbed hair, I never saw so many bobbed heads as there are here. Kathleen knew them in Savannah.
I think every time I am at Will’s I will not say when I am going to start. I ought to wait until I get permission. Laura will be expecting me early this week. I will not get there. Kathleen thinks I ought to stop to see Miss Attee but I would rather go on if I can get trains to suit. We took a long auto trip today. There are so many places to go that they have not been there before. The country is beautiful and so many flowers. The children gather them and are at the side of the rode to sell them. Yesterday we were out and we got a big bunch for 25 cts and today we were out and got a lot more. I wish I could send you some. Atlanta is beautiful. Yesterday was Decoration Day April 26. They would have plenty of flowers. The snowball is in bloom now. The dog-wood is very pretty and many pink dog-woods. Will planted two in the front yard a pink one and a white one. There are two large trees in the yard but I don’t know what they are. The Daffodils are quite [???illegible???] there is a white one out today.
I want to get my clothes fixed up some while in Canton. I will enclose a letter from Jim. I am glad he is at Rebecca’s and he will get every attention.
My paper is [???illegible???] so I will stop as I hear the Buick coming.
With much love

1.
Sunday Night 9 P.M.
According to Barb, this was in the envelope postmarked April 28, so I’m dating it Sunday April 27.
And then we have:
Yesterday was Decoration Day April 26.
2.
Will and Kathleen have gone to the train to take Pickle as she is going to Savannah to stay a few weeks.
Pickle is Will and Kathleen's daughter Kathleen, also a.k.a. Kay, age 5 at this time, going to stay for a few weeks with her Farmer grandparents in Savannah.
3.
Kathleen thinks I ought to stop to see Miss Attee but I would rather go on if I can get trains to suit.
Miss Attee was a friend in Cincinnati. So there was an idea floating around of Mama Margaret stopping off in Cincinnati, and when she fell ill on the train, she decided to do so.
Mama Margaret might have left Atlanta on Friday May 4 - see:
1924-04-22 LETTER FROM MAMA MARGARET TO ALMA
4.
The snowball is in bloom now.
I googled and found:
Snowball bushes grow significantly larger than hydrangeas, reaching up to 10 feet tall and wide in warm climates. Hydrangeas tend to stop growing at 4-5 feet tall, though they'll often span outward further. Growth and care also vary between the snowball bush and hydrangea plants.
5.
I will enclose a letter from Jim. I am glad he is at Rebecca’s and he will get every attention.
Jim is Mama Margaret's younger brother Jim Provines, and Rebecca is Mama Margaret's younger sister Rebecca Provines Taggart.
This seems to be the last letter we have from Mama Margaret. She died May 8. Uncle Bill says she was visiting them in Atlanta and got a letter telling her that a relative died, so she went to the funeral and it was on that trip that she died. (I need to dig out that letter from Uncle Bill; I think I have it someplace.) Jim died on May 1, so I figure that Jim was the relative that Uncle Bill was talking about. Uncle Bill would have been seven at the time. It seems clear from Mama Margaret’s letters that she was planning to go to Ohio anyway. So I’m imagining that she received word in Atlanta that Jim had died, and as she was packing, Bill, who adored her (Barb has mentioned how much her father loved his grandmother Stokey), maybe asked, “Grandma, why do you have to go?” and she said, “I have to go to Uncle Jim’s funeral.” It sounds as though Jim had some illness from which he was not expected to recover.
