MARGARET JACKSON: ~ABOUT HER~---document-links---pictures---related pages---site navigation
Margaret was a school friend of Kathleen's in England, sharing a love of music with her. They corresponded, off and on, for the rest of Kathleen's life, and then Kathleen's daughter Kay continued the correspondence.
Margaret lived with her parents, and had several brothers. Her father, Forbes Jackson (one of several Forbes Jacksons in the family), was a minister. They lived in Reading and Worcester before coming to London, which was where Margaret and Kathleen met. Around the time that Kathleen came to America, Reverend Jackson got a job (sorry, I don't know the correct church wording for this) with a church in Aberdeen, Scotland, so the Jackson family moved there.
Reverend Jackson died in 1913. Margaret's brothers grew up and lived their own lives. Margaret never married. She and her mother stayed in Aberdeen through World War I, but they had never particularly liked Aberdeen. Around 1918 they moved to Reading, where they had been happy before. This was around the time that Kathleen and Will & Maggie & Billy were moving to San Antonio, so Margaret Jackson and Kathleen lost contact, there being no email addresses back then to tide them over the moves. They regained contact a few years later through another school friend, Winnie Johnson, a..k. a. (to me) the one who called Kathleen "Gassie".
Our last letter from Margaret was written in the 1950s. She would have been in her sixties at that time. I assume that she then died, but I don't know, and it's hard to find information online about somebody with such an unindividual name as Margaret Jackson. Forbes Jackson ought to be slightly easier, but it isn't.
Margaret is not important to our family, but we have tons of letters from her. They're mostly about her own life, not Kathleen's, but there's the occasional response to something Kathleen said. What sticks in my mind is Margaret's run-downs of what their school friends were doing. They went all over the place! Africa, India, Australia, Germany - and, of course, Kathleen in the US.
Since Margaret is not important to our family, so far I've uploaded only two of her letters. But I enjoyed reading them. It was like reading an English novel of the sort that Aunt Alma liked. So eventually I'll include more of them.
