1.
As a result of examinations held in San Francisco, New York, and Manila the following line officers have been transferred to the corps of engineers of the army
An article in an Ohio newspaper said that Will originally chose to be in the Artillery, but judging from this article, that was wrong, and he had to take an examination in order to get into the Corps of Engineers:At West Point those who stand highest in their classes are assigned to the engineering corps. Stokey stood well in his classes. He preferred the artillery corps to that of engineering, and was therefore given his choice.
2.
Paul S. Bond (formerly Stanley B. Hamilton)
I was curious about this, so I googled and found that Paul Stanley Bond was also known as Stanley Bond Hamilton. Paul's father, Joseph Webster Bond, died in 1890 when Paul was about 11, and Paul's mother remarried. I couldn't bring up the page that might have told the name of the second husband, but I figure it must have been Hamilton.
