Squaw winter reigned Wednesday. Snow began to fall in the early part of the day and continued until the afternoon.
According to Weather Observer Stokey it was the earliest fall of the "beautiful" since 1869.
Sunshine and warm weather are due within a week, the old almanacs say. After squaw summer, according to the old school of weather prophets, Indian summer is warm and the atmosphere smoky.
2. The Native American weather references in this item interest me. I had heard of Indian summer but not of squaw winter or squaw summer. As far as I can tell, if you add "Indian" or "squaw" to a season name, it means, "Well, who would have thought you'd get that kind of weather at this time of year?"
It seems only appropriate that this item appeared on Indigenous Peoples Day, then called Columbus Day.
3. According to Weather Observer Stokey it was the earliest fall of the "beautiful" since 1869. No, I don't understand the "beautiful".
