Will's two-year stint in the Philippines is just about over! He's seeing quite a lot of death there, but fortunately it's all on the silver screen.

Dear Eva
Night before last I went to a costume dance given by the Artistica Society. I ran across a lot of people from Camp Jossman and joined their party. We tried the refreshments which, according to Spanish custom, consisted of all sorts of heavy food such as meat pies. I repented the next day. I went over to Camp Jossman and the next day (yesterday) took lunch with the colonel. I had a little headache to begin with and a short time after lunch I had a bad headache and a bad tummy. The doctor gave me some powders and after I had slept for a couple of hours I was all right except for a little dizziness. I went to Capt. Fall's for dinner Madison and Hardman (Lts. 12 “ [???illegible???]) I had them give me some toast and tea and a soft boiled egg. The others had a fine dinner. I think Aunt Lydia would enjoy hearing of my dyspepsia and say “I told you so.” I am now on light diet.
I am down here making a survey of the Port of Iloilo military reservation. I came 15 days ago and expect to be here about 2 weeks longer. I have 5 men with me. From here I go to Cebu to do a little surveying.
Dodge this next paragraph. It is a boast.
I made expert rifleman at our target practice a few weeks ago. I will probably be sent to the Department Competition if I get back to Manila in time for it. I also get a silver badge.
I have just received a letter from Alma. We are expecting to go back to the state on the May 15th transport but we have received no orders yet. You will know about it before we do if you watch the Army and Navy Journal order columns. As for getting a leave I will be pretty sure to get one. I may possibly have to wait until some of the others take theirs first as all who go back will be after leaves.
This is a pretty quiet place. About the only amusement is to take a walk or to go to see the “Cinematografo”. These natives seem to be very fond of death scenes and hell scenes. I have seen the crucifiction, the death of Don Quijote, the death of Pope Leo XIII and the guillotining of Marie Antoinette, besides any number of scenes from Hades. I enclose one of the programs.
Enclosed you should find 3 checks amounting to to $260.
With Love
Will
PS. News is to scarce to make up the long letter now. This letter is interest.

1. On the envelope, Will put the return address as Manila but he was clearly on a different island in the Philippines, so the Manila return address was just for routing.
2.
I ran across a lot of people from Camp Jossman and joined their party.
Wikipedia says:
Camp Jossman was a United States Army cantonment constructed near the town of Buenavista on Guimaras Island in the Philippines after the Spanish–American War.
and
In 1912 the U.S. Army determined that there was no longer a need for bases on Guimaras Island, and Camp Jossman was vacated. The buildings and other infrastructure were subsequently demolished.
Iloilo City, where Will is writing from, is a port on an island well south of Manila. Guimaras island is a small island across the Iloilo Strait from Iloilo City. Cebu, where Will is going to do some surveying, is a couple of islands over, to the east.
3.
I think Aunt Lydia would enjoy hearing of my dyspepsia and say “I told you so.”
Papa Charles had a sister Lydia. Maybe that's the Aunt Lydia that Will is talking about. If so, I think it's the only time any of the Five Stokey Siblings mention their Stokey relatives, and it's not exactly complimentary.
4.
I made expert rifleman at our target practice a few weeks ago.
So far I have come across nothing in any of Will's other letters to indicate an interest in marksmanship.
5.
I have seen the crucifiction, the death of Don Quijote, the death of Pope Leo XIII and the guillotining of Marie Antoinette, besides any number of scenes from Hades.
Wikipedia says:
Pope Leo XIII was head of the Catholic Church from 20 February 1878 until his death in July 1903.
