Here we learn that Papa Charles was the executor for the will of Mama Margaret's mother either in the middle of or just after the divorce of Papa Charles and Mama Margaret. It must have been so very awkward!

Prof. Charles F. Stokey, who is now located near Freeburg, was in the city Saturday, on business. Mr. Stokey has just been appointed executor of the last will and testament of Mrs. Jane Provines, who died in West Ninth street, December 17, 1900. Mrs. Provines was Mr. Stokey's moth-in-law. By request, in the will, no bond is required of Mr. Stokey. The will was made October 8, 1897. Mr. Stokey is improving in health and many old friends were glad to greet him during his stay in the city.

I think the Provineses tended to be less well-educated than the Stokeys, so that may have been part of her reasoning, but I'm also wondering if Mama Margaret, in her aversion to discussing unpleasantness, had refrained from talking to her aged mother about her husband's abuse at the time that the will was made.
The divorce petition was filed in the last year of Grandma Provines's life, when health issues may have been taking over. Papa Charles recorded in his family record that she died of acute indigestion:
