This is one of three letters all written in Atlanta by Maggie (age 21), Kay (age 15), and Roger (age 13) on the same day, to their father Will, who was in Houston, Texas, hoping to strike oil on some land that he had bought.
1934-07-30 LETTER FROM MAGGIE TO WILL
1934-07-30 LETTER FROM KAY TO WILL
1934-07-30 LETTER FROM ROGER TO WILL
There is no mention of Kathleen in any of the letters, but apparently she was in Atlanta with them. So far, I don't have a letter from Billy from this day, but he was in Atlanta, because Roger mentions him, so I don't know if he didn't write a letter or if it was that he did write a letter and it was lost.
Kay is charmingly focussed on being an aspiring reporter. Or anyway, I'm charmed.

Monday
Dear Daddy,
We were very glad to receive the card and the letter. We were not so glad, however, to hear about the Humble well.
Last night W.S.B. was invited by the General Electric Company to give a half-hour program over N.B.C. - broadcasting to the Byrd Expedition. It was a very good program, I thought. Ernest Rogers and Lambdin Kay sang a "Byrd Expedition" arrangement of "Mr. Rogers and Mr. Kay." The program was broadcast to 83 stations over the country as well as to the Expedition. Did you hear it? The wife of the camera man came here from Asheville to send a message to her husband. She had a good voice, I thought.
I went to two swimming parties recently. One, given by Martha Hunt at her summer home out past Marietta, I went to a week ago last Friday. I went to the other, given by Betty Taylor at the Brookhaven country club, last Monday. It is certainly a nice club. I enjoyed them both very much. They are both girls in my room at school.
Roger went to the baseball game last Saturday. It was a double-header between Atlanta and Chattanooga (I believe).
Margaret and I cleaned out the kitchen cupboard last Friday and it certainly was a job!
On Friday we also walked over to Sears Roebuck and back. They have changed the store around and have cut some double stairs through to the basement. Down there is the paint department, etc. now and it is very nice. They have one room which they call the "Bargain Annex" instead of the whole floor for the "Bargain Basement."
I hope there will be some better news soon.
Much love to you,
Kathleen

Last night W.S.B. was invited by the General Electric Company to give a half-hour program over N.B.C. - broadcasting to the Byrd Expedition.
A quick google did not get me a nice brief summary of the Byrd Expedition to Antarctica, so here's a not-so-brief summary from Wikipedia:
On his second expedition during the winter of 1933-1934, (effectively it was summer below the equator) Byrd spent five months alone operating a meteorological station, Advance Base, from which he narrowly escaped with his life after suffering carbon monoxide poisoning from a poorly ventilated stove. Unusual radio transmissions from Byrd finally began to alarm the men at the base camp, who then attempted to go to Advance Base. The first two trips were failures due to darkness, snow, and mechanical troubles. Finally, Thomas Poulter, E. J. Demas, and Amory Waite arrived at Advance Base, where they found Byrd in poor physical health. The men remained at Advance Base until October 12. when an airplane from the base camp picked up Dr. Poulter and Byrd. The rest of the men returned to base camp with the tractor. This expedition is described by Byrd in his autobiography Alone.
I think the whole concept of broadcasting to Antarctica in 1934 would have been pretty cool.

Roger went to the baseball game last Saturday. It was a double-header between Atlanta and Chattanooga (I believe).
I think this must have been the Southern Association, the Atlanta Crackers versus the Chattanooga Lookouts. According to Wikipedia, the New Orleans Pelicans won the Southern Association pennant in 1934.
4.
On Friday we also walked over to Sears Roebuck and back.
Sears Roebuck might have been on Ponce de Leon Avenue and therefore about a 3-mile walk, but I'm not sure.
