Alma's on her way to Hawaii. Nowadays it takes about 12 hours to fly from Boston to Hawaii, but in 1959 Alma is in San Francisco about to board a steamship.

[Over the Town House Motel letterhead]
We stayed here last night.
[The rest of the letter]
Tuesday, Jan. 13, noon
Dear Fredda,
I have just returned from the P.O. 6 blocks away, where I posted my winter coat to you. Will you be so good as to take it out of the box and hang it in my office closet. I think that is safe enough from moths or anything else.
I am sitting in the middle, or more accurately at the side of my mass of luggage, rather more compact than when I left S.H.
The steamship question's has held us almost breathless. When we arrived in Palo Alto Sunday we knew more (from the Sunday paper) than the steamship office did at 9 Monday morning.when Geoffrey called up, but by 10:30 when we reached the office they knew that the Hawaiian Texton [???] Line had been taken over by another Corporation. They said we would sail Tuesday night, and this morning we were told to go on board between 6 + 7 this evening, having had our dinners (or suppers), as nothing will be served this evening.
Yesterday was a very happy day. We came here and got established, then I called on my dear friend, Mrs. Wilson, at the St. Francis.
3:15
In taxi on my way back to hotel - Clara, Miss Sarbes [???] and I, - Lenette called us up at the St. Francis beauty parlor to say that the sailing had been advanced to 4:30 and to come at once, even if we were wet, + so here we are. We shall load the luggage into the taxi + go to the Lanehai [???].
Love,
Alma

I think this letter to Fredda was among the trove of letters and other documents that Kay collected. But I don't know how it got there.

One of the the things that gets me about reading these letters is how casually people put major items in the mail.
