Poor, poor Kathleen. Will is spoiling her whole summer at the beach by not writing to her from Atlanta, where he stayed to WORK.

August 10 1923.
Dear Will,
Had another letter writing time this afternoon + got quite a good many written. Margaret was invited to a Picture Show + Alma took Billy + Kathleen to some water sports which they enjoyed very much + so I had some time to myself as Roger took a nap. Tonight I am getting some more writing done. Tuesday morning Sarah + Helen Laird came. You will probably remember that Sarah Laird was a roommate of Alma's at Oberlin. They were touring in their Ford. They stayed until Wed. (not here but in a room near by and had meals here. They were very pleasant. Took Grandmother + the children riding in their car and they all enjoyed it very much.
Last night Miss Turner took Margaret + K + me out for a row. We went from the Eel Pond to the little harbor and it was a beautiful evening with lovely sunset so that it was very pleasant.
Today the weather has been very good - Tuesday it was damp and gray. The children had a good bathe today - yesterday there was surf and they enjoyed that too as now they like to jump the waves. Billy is much more courageous in the water now than he was at first. Today a boy about 12 took Billy + K for a row on the mill pond at the back of the house in Miss Clapp's boat. It is flat bottomed + quite safe + they enjoyed it very much.
I am wondering what is the matter that you do not write it is two weeks less a day since I heard from you and I have written every few days and to 3 different addresses. It does not seem very kind. You must know that I should enjoy myself more if I had letters from you + you may not realize that the mail all goes to Alma's office so that both she and your mother know that you are not writing + wonder why. If you did not get letters from me it was because you did not enquire at the Hotel + the Club. I certainly wrote + it was not my fault if you did not ask for your mail.
I think you will remember that when you were away last year I wrote frequently because I knew you would enjoy your trip more if you heard often from home. I know I wrote more often than you did + wrote much longer letters than you, so I cannot see why you should treat me in this way. I cannot believe you are deliberately trying to spoil my time here. I am not cross about it - I have a kind of dead feeling about it all.
The children are all very well. Roger now says Daddy gone to Atlanta.
I suppose you will be going to a memorial service tomorrow. There is a 15 minute one here at a Church but don't suppose any of us will go. Margaret's school closes tomorrow. I am sorry because she has enjoyed it and it occupies her for an hour or two. She is looking very well indeed.
I am wondering whether you have done anything about a house but it is not much use asking as you do not write.
I had a letter from Miss Rastert. She spoke of Mrs. Robinson, who is Reader I believe in 1st Church. She was a Cincinnati girl who knows a lot of the people we knew. I think she was a Miss Japp + Margaret knew Marjorie Japp at school - a niece I think.
Well I must get to some more letters.
Kathleen.

1.
Here are the ages of Will's children in 1923:
Maggie: 10
Billy: 6
Kay: 4
Roger: 2
2.
Tuesday morning Sarah + Helen Laird came.
It's Sara Laird, not Sarah, but never mind. She's mentioned in the Non-Family Ohio Folks page. I guess Helen is a sister.
3.
Took Grandmother + the children riding in their car and they all enjoyed it very much.
Grandmother is Mama Margaret.
4.
Last night Miss Turner took Margaret + K + me out for a row.
I have Miss Turner on the Non-Family Woods Hole folks page of this website. Not that I know much of anything about her.
5.
Today a boy about 12 took Billy + K for a row on the mill pond at the back of the house in Miss Clapp's boat.
The Extra! page for Fernbank has a map a near the top, showing that Dr. Clapp's house was three lots down from Fernbank.
6.
I am wondering what is the matter that you do not write
Oh for heaven's sake. They've been married for seven years. Kathleen knows perfectly well what the matter is: Will is always a laggard in letter-writing. If she wants to hear from him then instead of nagging him she should have left behind a bunch of postcards (stamped and addressed!) so that he could send one every day. Will liked writing postcards.
7.
you may not realize that the mail all goes to Alma's office so that both she and your mother know that you are not writing + wonder why.
Mama Margaret and Alma aren't wondering why Will isn't writing; they already know why. They've known Will longer than Kathleen has. But it is interesting to learn that all the mail goes to Alma's office at the MBL.
Incidentally, this letter was helpful in confirming a date on a letter from Mama Margaret (who was, as usual careless about dates):
1923-07-30 LETTER FROM MAMA MARGARET TO EVA
8.
I suppose you will be going to a memorial service tomorrow. There is a 15 minute one here at a Church
President Warren G. Harding had died on August 2, 1923, eight days before this letter was written.
9.
I am wondering whether you have done anything about a house but it is not much use asking as you do not write.
Will was transferred from Cincinnati to Atlanta in July of 1923, so I guess they didn't get around to finding somewhere to live before Kathleen and the kids went up to Woods Hole.
10.
I had a letter from Miss Rastert. She spoke of Mrs. Robinson, who is Reader I believe in 1st Church.
There's a letter or two from a Mr. Robinson, a Christian Scientist. I don't know if it's the same Robinson.
