Fredda Reed dies at 93; pioneer in paleobotany field.
SOUTH HADLEY - Fredda D. Reed, 93, of 15 Jewett Lane, former chairwoman of the plant science department at Mount Holyoke College, died Thursday in Holyoke Hospital. A pioneer in the field of paleobotany, she joined the Mount Holyoke faculty in 1928 and retired in 1960. Her published research continues to be used by scholars today.
Miss Reed received her A.B. degree from Earlham College, Richmond, Ind. She earned both M.A. and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Chicago where she was awarded a fellowship for research study.
She was an instructor at Earlham College and then a biology technician for the General Biological Supply House in Chicago before joining the Mount Holyoke faculty.
