1.
Miss Alma Stokey, professor of botany, sails Saturday with her sister on the Leviathan for the summer in Rome.
The sister must be Eva, because it certainly wouldn't be Laura, and we know that Eva went to Europe somewhere around this time. We have a September postcard that Alma wrote in Edinburgh, Scotland:
1926-09-13 POSTCARD FROM ALMA TO KAY
2.
The Leviathan appears to have been originally named The Vaterland. Wikipedia says:
SS Vaterland was an ocean liner launched on 3 April 1913 and began service in 1914 for Germany's Hamburg America Line.
and:
With U.S. entry into the war in 1917 Vaterland and the German line's Hoboken facility were seized by the US government.
and:
In June 1923 the ship was returned to the Shipping Board as the SS Leviathan
3.
Miss Grace M. Baker, teacher in the Allegheny College, Pennsylvania, is spending a few days with Miss Ellen Hansdale. Miss Baker sails Saturday from New York on the Penland for Europe.
This must be Grace Bacon and Ellen Hinsdale, who are in the Non-Family South Hadley folks page. Also, the ship's name was Pennland, not Penland.
