U. S. ENGINEER COMING TO RELIEVE BROTHER OFFICER
Captain William P. Stokey is expected to arrive in Los Angeles some time tomorrow from San Francisco to relieve Lieutenant Charles T. Leeds as United States district engineer here. Lieutenant Leeds had been granted leave of absence on account of his health. He recently sprained his ankle while inspecting work on the Los Angeles harbor and has been compelled to go about on crutches since receiving the injury.
It is believed that this injury undermined his health, and in order to avoid a complete breakdown he was given an indefinite leave of absence by the war department.

This is one of a series of newspaper and magazine items over the years about Will's work for the Army Corps of Engineers. You can find the whole list here:
WILL'S ARMY CAREER
Formerly I was putting the whole list in each of the pages of the series, but there got to be just too many to continue with that.

It was while Will was so gallantly relieving his brother officer that he met his first wife, Margaret. So Lieutenant Leeds's sprained ankle changed the course of Stokey family history - if in fact it was a sprained ankle. It's hard to say. See:
