Mama Margaret died unexpectedly on May 8. Will is in Cincinnati dealing with it, and Kathleen is at home in Atlanta taking care of the children and the chickens.

Saturday
My dear Will -
When Margaret comes back from her music lesson I am going to leave her in charge here while I go to the bank + maybe do a little shopping - buy a few things to eat. I will mail this then so that it may go out on the afternoon train.
For once the mails were quick from Savannah and I enclose letter I had this morning. Father sent me some blank checks to sign so that he can renew the loan + pay the interest $76.00.
This house does not seem nearly as lonesome at night as the big one in Cincinnati used to do when you were away - but I shall be glad when you come back only of course you must stay as long as you are needed by the girls. Your leave notice came this morning + I will enclose it in this.
I had a letter from Miss Attee this morning and also the egg box. It was a clear day yesterday but at 5:30 this morning I wakened + found it had rained considerably. I thought of the chickens + decided they were big enough to look out for themselves. It is still cloudy but it is not raining hard. Margaret has just come in. She says that her recital is next Friday, but that it is only for the children - parents do not go. Mrs. Watkins rang up to know whether she could get eggs and I told her she could have some this afternoon.
Mr. Passalaigne cut his grass + I asked whether we could have the grass for the chickens, so they will have a fine feast when Margaret + Billy get it for them. The chickens are all flourishing. I am going to put the two batches in the garage all together with one hen at night. The other hen persists in getting up early going over to Mrs. Goodwin's so I have put her in the broody coop, + soon shall let her out with the others.
I got a very good reference for a girl that came to see me yesterday but she wants a room on the lot. I told her to try one of those at the back here + she went + said they did not want to rent it. She is supposed to call me up + I will see what I can do about it.
The man called up about painting the car, said the running boards + upholstery work would be $15 and some other thing you had asked about he could get for $5. I told him I did not think that car was worth 7 coats, but he said you could not get a good finish without that. I imagine it would almost like new when done.
I don't think anything else has happened since you went. The children are all well. Margaret slept with me last night + it was a comfort to both of us.
I will write a little note for the girls. I wish I could be there with you.
Much love to my boy -
Kathleen
Turn over
All this is very trivial at this time but still it may help a little.

For once the mails were quick from Savannah and I enclose letter I had this morning.
Here's the letter, from Kathleen's mother:
1924-05-10 LETTER FROM ANNIE FARMER TO KATHLEEN
Father sent me some blank checks to sign so that he can renew the loan + pay the interest $76.00.
What loan? I don't know.
I shall be glad when you come back only of course you must stay as long as you are needed by the girls.
"the girls" are Alma (age 46), Laura (age 43), and Eva (age 39). All of them considerably older than Kathleen (age 35), but I guess that's how Will thought of them. Later in the letter:
I will write a little note for the girls.
