Fred is being very Fred-like. And Will, as was usual for him in this era, being generous with the checks.

Dear Will
This is my third start at a letter and here’s hoping it will fare better than the others. There is nothing much doing today except April showers. Our school year will soon be over and then I will be about one fourth of an M.D. one of the [illegible]
Next week we finish up embryology lab work and start in physiological chemistry lab. Did you do much in that line at West Point? We have to analyze stomach contents urine feces +c and determine quantitatively the various things found there. I have helped Mabel some in getting out the typewritten reports so I know what the usual run of things is. Some day when I am at the lab I will send you a sample of the blanks.
Have you made any plans for the summer? I don’t know yet what I will do. If I could get into one of the shops here as a toolmaker I might stay. There are several large shops here. I want to have [illegible - some name beginning with D?] up for a week after college closes. I am building a canoe and want to take a canoeing [illegible] in down the Kalamazoo River. I would like to have the family come to B.C. for a part of the summer vacation. It is doubtful if Mama would come this way again so soon. I was so disappointed that she hurried away from Ionia without stopping here last fall. I would like to have you come with the family for [???] an outing. I want you especially for you have not met Mabel yet. She too is anxious to see you. I have trusted Eva to prepare you and tell you how nice she is, but that don’t quite fill the bill. Seeing is believing. There are lots of pretty places in this region now too it is on the way toward Georgian Bay. I don’t know whether you are still thinking [three illegible words] or not since Mama and Alma have [illegible] it.
Before leaving Chicago I took dinner at the Coute’s with Miss Starr. It was my first beefsteak since leaving Oberlin and as rare as Alma eats it. I felt quite equal to anything in that line and I got away with a good sized piece. I don’t wonder that Alma enjoyed their company.
Last but not least I want to avail myself of your generous offer of further assistance in case of need. I have borrowed from Mabel for some things but as to board and laundry they are four weeks in arrears. I have tried to make an estimate for the remainder of the school year. There is but one more lab fee of $5 [???might be 45] and one more book. Mabel and I have [illegible] on our books and that helps considerably. I can get them all right on about sixty dollars.
Let me know what are the prospects of seeing you this summer. It is hard to make plans when we are scattered.
With love
Fred

1.
Here’s the note that I put with the scans:
About Fred’s 1909 letters to Will…
4/18/1909 1909-04-18 LETTER FROM FRED TO WILL
9/20/1909 1909-09-20 LETTER FROM FRED TO WILL
10/28/1909 1909-10-28 LETTER FROM FRED TO WILL
What AG had was photocopies of them, not the actual letters. They looked as though they had gotten wet, so I imagine they were copied and then thrown out as not salvageable.
We do have the original envelope for the 9/20/1909 letter. As I finished up scanning this bunch of stuff, a stamp fluttered out from somewhere, and it appeared to have come from the envelope, so I rescanned the envelope with the stamp in place, and then stuck the stamp inside the envelope.

It surprises me that Mama Margaret had been in Ionia, Michigan the previous fall - i.e. 1908. I haven't come across any mention of it in other letters. But perhaps she went to stay with the Hickses (her sister was Mary Provines Hicks) while Alma was dealing with the move from Oberlin to South Hadley.
