Dear Will,
I suppose the girls have been sounding the praises of our cottage by the sea that there is nothing left for me to say. It is a delightful place to rest and do as you please, and dress as primitive as you did in your camp by Lake Erie. There is one cottage near that is occupied by a Physician and family but they are here to rest and they are resting. The other cottages are farther away. It is quite sandy here. I never saw any thing like it. It must be a good place for strawberries, for we got some from a man who lives near that are the largest I have ever seen. They sell two boxes for 30 cts. That is cheaper than at South Hadley. We do hope you will get here before the season is over. You have not said a word yet about coming and we do want you to come while Frank is here. I think Eva wrote you that he was coming on the 6th of July. I am looking forward to having a nice visit with you both here. The climate is delightful. There is a little breeze all the time that is very pleasant. There are very few mosquitoes, I suppose it is because we are so high and the breeze too keeps them away. We have such nice little veranda on the second floor that would be a fine place to sleep if you still like to sleep out of doors. We all enjoy having so much room after living in one and two rooms for so long, one learns to appreciate a roomy house.
You can have a room all to yourself when you come, with the upper porch too. Now isn’t that an inducement. I wonder if it isn’t getting pretty hot in Ga. It has been very hot in New York, Alma is just reading about it. Let us know soon about coming. It was very kind of you to send such a big check. We all appreciated it. And I was so glad you sent Laura such a generous check for it will enable her to take a good rest before she begins to practise. She has had a hard year because she was tired out at the beginning of it. She worked all last summer - had no rest at all, so she is resting now. She intended to go to Ionia to visit John Hicks so I suppose she is there now.
I wish you were all here now with Frank and Mabel added to the bunch. I think you would all have a pretty good time. I am afraid you are not very anxious to come when you don’t say any thing about it, but I think you will like it. Alma and Eva have been bathing and they say it is fine. They have not been out rowing yet, the man has not had time to get the boat out. I saw four girls out in one boat this evening. I enjoy watching the tide coming in, and seeing the sailing vessels out on the bay.
We get excellent fresh fish. Mr. Davis goes down when the fishermen come in and gets them. We have had mackerel twice. They are excellent and are quite cheap.
I received a nice letter from Mrs. Braden today. They hope to sell the paper soon. I wish they could. I must now close, I have written several letters to you and you never answer. I guess I will have to do as Alma threatened to do once. She said she was going to write and ask you for a dime just to get a letter. As you seldom write without sending money. It is getting near bedtime so I will stop. Hoping to hear from you very soon that you are coming.
Goodby.
With much love from
Mother

She intended to go to Ionia to visit John Hicks so I suppose she is there now.
John Hicks was a son of Mary Provines Hicks, Mama Margaret's sister who died in the spring of 1909.
I mention this letter in the Fernbank page on this website, because I imagine that Alma was remembering this happy time when she built Fernbank.
