Miss Florence Blue of Ferry street has been awarded the certificate for reading the greatest number of books. She has read 34 books in the time allotted for the competition.
I don't know who awarded the certificate. I figure the time allotted for the competition was July and August, so young Florence averaged a book every couple of days. Of course I was curious about her, and newspapers.com obliged me with her obituary, which was, like this item, in the Holyoke Transcript-Telegram. She graduated from South Hadley High School in 1932, married a minister, and was an herbalist, ornithologist, Girl Scout leader, and - not surprisingly - Sunday School teacher. She also lectured at Mount Holyoke College, which is surprising, because it sounds as though she never attended college. She died in September 1981 at age 66, leaving behind her husband, a brother, four children, and eight grandchildren. 66 seems awfully young!
Miss Ellen Hinsdale and sisters, who have been her guests for a month are visiting Miss Alma Stokey at Woods Hole.
Miss Hinsdale was the head of the German department at Mount Holyoke. I have her in the Non-Family South Hadley folks page. There's a Holyoke Transcript-Telegram item about her visiting Fernbank 24 years later, long after she retired and moved to Michigan to be with her sister Mildred:
