A very short letter from Will, surrounding the important part: money. And yet the letter was kept after the check was cashed. It reminds me of the AE Housman poem "The Immortal Part".

Havana, Cuba,
December 9, 1901.
Dear Alma,
As the mail carrier will soon be here I will have to write a few lines and then stop. I enclose check for thirty and 3 stamps. I use a stub pen as you should have been able to see. I have a piece of music which I expect to get sent to you sometime.
With love
Will.

I enclose check for thirty and 3 stamps.
Or maybe it's 8 stamps? Or some other number? Whatever the number, I don't understand why he sent stamps. One does hear of them being used in lieu of money but in that case why both a check and stamps? If it were for somebody's collection, I think Will would have said so. That's how he was.
I use a stub pen as you should have been able to see.
Endlesspens.com says:
Stub nibs achieve line variation as a result of their unique nib design. A stub nib's tipping is flattened into a rectangular shape. As a result, the stub creates a thick downward stroke and a narrow horizontal line. Stub nib widths range from 0.6mm to 2.3mm, which is the measurement of the downstroke. The broader the nib, the more line variation you’ll get as more ink is placed on the page.
