One of the many endearing things about Will was the sincere interest he took in what his siblings did. He sent plants to Alma, Fred wrote him in detail about his medical studies, he shared with Eva a serious interest in music, and I have no doubt that if we had any letters between him and Laura (and surely there must have been some!), we would see him talking intelligently about osteopathy.
And he took an interest in the little boy who was staying with his family. Will was so nice!

March 3, 1908
Dear Mother,
Eva’s letter has just come. I don’t know whether the child should be sent out into the cold world to teach or not. I don’t know whether she ought to teach with Zana or not. I guess it depends on the man. I think Mr. K. is a lobster if his main idea is to keep people from laughing at him. If Eva stays at Oberlin I should think she would do better to get another teacher. I should think also it would be a good idea to get Breck if she could do so as he seems to have more graduates than any one else.
I received the candy O.K. Many thanks. It was very good. Did Orestes read the cypher message? Did you get the plants all right? The one with little leaves like this [drawing] is a kind of Lycopodium. The little blue colored stuff is an air plant. All it needs is a little water every day or so. It is called Tillandua I think. It grows hanging from the trees. I think there was some Selliginella (?) (It is some name like that) It was the flat one [drawing]. As I remember it looks something like the above. I haven’t any here to draw from. I think there were also some cacti and some small century plants.
You were not very observing or you would have seen that I sent you the commission. I have another one to send now. I expect to send it in a few days.
I am enclosing a check for $100.00. What do you think of buying an island or a part of one? It seem to me that if we did not get stuck at the start it would be all right as it ought to increase in value.

Orestes Cleveland, aged about 10 at this time, a ward of Alma's friend Mabel Watson. He was staying with the Stokeys while going to school in Oberlin. I've got him on the Non-Family page for Mabel, Lil, Steenie, and Orestes.
