Oberlin Jan 17, 1906
Dear Will;
I should have written yesterday to thank you for the check if the girls had not been sending you such a budget. I thought I had better spread it out a little.
I think I shall go to Cleveland Saturday to get my furs, and a cold meat fork for Mama. Eva and I are going down together. I may stay over Sunday + visit Bess Werntz but Eva has to come back for the lecture. I believe she has told you her tale of woe. It sounds like old times. Mr. Woodruff used to go with Sara Laird when I roomed with her and she used to fuss and fume every time she was going anywhere with him. Really though he is all right. He is very bright, but not quick in conversation. He can’t do small talk. I don’t believe there is a better man in Oberlin, but he is monstrously homely according to connoisseurs. I defended him so long to Sara that I can do it automatically. I think I am about the only girl who appreciates him and he doesn’t know it alas!
Eva and I had a dancing lesson Monday night. We are getting along beautifully - we practise in all our leisure moments. I expect to see all the carpets in holes in a few weeks. Mr. Hammond dances like an angel (not a Methodist one). I never danced with a man who was so easy to dance with.
I heard the Kneisel String Quartet yesterday. I believe it is the most perfect organization in existence.
You are doing admirably on the letter question. I hope you will keep it up. Remember that it doesn’t take many ideas to make a letter (e.g. this one) so you can write every time you have one.
With love
Alma.

1.
I should have written yesterday to thank you for the check if the girls had not been sending you such a budget.
Oxford Languages says of "budget":
ARCHAIC
a quantity of material, typically that which is written or printed.
2.
Eva has to come back for the lecture. I believe she has told you her tale of woe.
I haven't come across Eva's tale of woe, but Alma's next sentences suggest to me that her ever-susceptible young heart fell victim to a totally oblivious Mr. Woodruff.
3.
It sounds like old times.
Oh, gosh, Eva.
4.
There's a picture of Mr. Woodruff in the Alma's College Yearbook page on this website, so you can see for yourself if he's homely or not.

I heard the Kneisel String Quartet yesterday. I believe it is the most perfect organization in existence.
Wikipedia says:
The Kneisel Quartet was a string quartet musical ensemble established in Boston, in the U.S. state of Massachusetts in 1885. It existed until 1917, and in its time became recognised as the leading string quartet in the United States. It also performed in Europe.
