THE BRADENS: ~ABOUT THEM~---document-links---pictures---related pages---site navigation
The Bradens were Andrew and Clementine and their son John, who was a good friend of Will’s. They were neighbors of the Stokeys in Canton. You can see them next door to the Stokeys in the 1900 US census listing. (Yes, yes, I'll add it to this website someday.) The internet tells me that Andrew was Captain Andrew D. Braden (2 Sep 1835–15 Aug 1919), so I assume he fought in the Civil War. I haven't looked for further details.
In Mama Margaret's divorce petition there is a mention of some neighbors:
That again in the month of August, 1899, the said defendant was guilty of extreme cruelty toward the plaintiff in this: That he again cursed her, called her names such as set forth heretofore in the petition, and kept it up until neighbors were about to interfere and threatened to have him arrested.
I suspect that those neighbors were the Bradens, but I don’t think I’ll ever know for sure.
Sadly, young John died of Bright’s disease on his 21st birthday, September 21, 1901. I never see a mention of other children, so I guess John was the only child. Mrs. Braden kept in touch with the Stokeys, especially Mama Margaret, long after both families had moved away from Canton.
When Mr. Braden died in 1919, Kathleen apparently wrote a sympathy letter. We have Mrs. Braden's letter in response, in which she talks about Will’s and Kathleen’s recent visit with the children to the Bradens.
After her husband's death, Mrs. Braden moved to New Jersey and lived with her sister until she died in 1921. Here's an obituary from the May 4, 1921 edition of the Jersey Observer and Jersey Journal. It doesn't seem to fit in with all the Stokey documents, so I'm just putting it here

We have a picture or two of poor John Braden that I need to add. I don't think I've come across a picture of Mr. and Mrs. Braden, but I may look further sometime.
