Sibyl writes to the Woman's Board of the Canadian Mission to tell them of his engagement to Fred. It's a nice letter - deliberately nice, I think.

Chissamba,
Catabola, Bié, Angola.
July I6, I927.
Dear Miss Jamieson,
My letter this month is of a little different nature to those of former times. I want you to share with me in my new found happiness.
You are already acquainted with Dr. Fred E. Stokey, of Dondi, so he needs no introduction! We have met a number of times since I came to Angola. We have always enjoyed each others company and seemed to understand each other so well. You will remember that we both attended missionaries at Sachiquela, Galangue and last fall. The former two early this year.
During that time we had opportunities for pleasant times together and we became good friends, and at that time I thought I had become acquainted with and formed a friendship with one who is certainly a very worthwhile man indeed. After I returned to Chissamba we carried on a friendly correspondence. At the Annual Meeting at Dondi Dr. Stokey told me that he had become greatly interested in me and while he did not wish me to make any decision at that time, he would like me to tell him if there was any reason that our friendship should discontinue. Before speaking to me in this way, he spoke to Mr. Steed, as my father was not here. I hace always enjoyed and appreciated very much Dr. Stokey’s friendship and so no reason why it should not develop into more than just ordinary friendship.
During these last two weeks Dr. Stokey has been here at Chissamba, operating with Dr. Hollenbeck at our surgical clinic. I have consented to his request and hope that we may soon have a reply from the Women’s Board of the United Church. The Doctor’s furlough is due next June, no definite plans have been decided on, but we would like to be married this coming November or December.
Please excuse this hurried note but my time is limited. Miss Mc. Ghie from Cammundongo is also here for the clinic. We two nurses with our native assistants are very busy indeed, caring for the two wards full of patients. To-day we completed the 38th. operation. Nurses find their minds and hands full when they have ward duties in cinnection with the operation-room. I shall write more in detail about this clinic later.
I have enjoyed very much my term of service under the Women’s Board. I have appreciated greatly and have been thankful for their kind and loving personal interest. I am trusting and praying that the coming year may prove of great service in the Lord’s vineyard, and now I am beginning to look forward with excitement to see you next year.
My daily prayer is that God’s richest blessing rest upon all that is done by the Women’s Board at home during these summer months.
Yours lovingly,
Catabola, Bié, Angola.

This is the copy that Sibyl kept of her letter informing the Canadian Mission folks of her engagement to Fred. It is bright and cheery and tells something of the story of their romance. It's nothing like the letter that Fred wrote to the Canadian Mission folks on the same subject:
1927-07-09 LETTER FROM FRED TO EFFIE A JAMIESON
So I figure Sibyl knew that there was an antipathy between Fred and Miss Jamieson, and hoped to persuade Miss Jamieson to acquiesce in the nice sentimental story. Oh, well, Sibyl tried.
We have three letters that Fred wrote to tell various mission people of his engagement, plus a letter that Sibyl wrote, for a total of four. Here are the four letters:
1927-07-09 LETTER FROM FRED TO REVEREND CURTIS McDOWELL
1927-07-09 LETTER FROM FRED TO JESSE ARNUP OF THE CANADIAN MISSION BOARD
1927-07-09 LETTER FROM FRED TO EFFIE A JAMIESON
1927-07-16 LETTER FROM SIBYL TO EFFIE A JAMIESON
