Imagine Eva driving down to the Atlanta Constitution office to tell Annie Lou Hardy the society page editor, "Remember my sister the world-famous fern authority whom you interviewed last spring? She's going to Hawaii for the winter!"

Mrs. Eva Stokey Evans is back at her Highland Terrace home after spending the summer with her sister, Dr. Alma Stokey of South Hadley, Mass., at their summer home in Woods Hole, Mass. Dr. Stokey leaves early in December with Mr. and Mrs. Geoffroy Atkinson of South Hadley and Miss Clara Jones of New York to spend the winter on the island of Maui in the Hawaiian group.

Dr. Stokey leaves early in December...
Not so early. She spent Christmas in Wayland with Will's son Roger and his family and a few others, went back to South Hadley on the 26th, and started out on the Hawaii trip on the 27th. See:

Alma had told the society page editor of the Atlanta Constitution the previous spring:
1958-04-06 ARTICLE ABOUT ALMA
“It is hard for me to leave South Hadley (she still lives in a faculty house on the Mt. Holyoke campus) because people from all over the world send me spores by mail,” she said. “You see, they have to be refrigerated as soon as they arrive. I work with Dr. Lenette Rogers Atkinson and both of us cannot leave at the same time. One of has to ‘baby sit’ with the ferns. When I travel, I send spores back to her, and vice versa.”
I guess Alma and Lenette must have found a babysitter. Fredda Reed, maybe?
