Alma's in college at Oberlin, and Mama Margaret writes her (and her friend Lil) a nice newsy letter from Canton.

Canton Aug. 16 1901
My dear girls.
Please accept my thanks for your beautiful reminder of my birth-day. I am delighted with it. I had a chance to show it to three dear friends this evening Mrs. Gavin, Mrs. Braden and Mrs. Sell all here at once and they all admired it. Mrs. Gavin staid to lunch and we went to prayer meeting together.
John is improving but very slowly. I feel so sorry for Mrs. Braden. She said this eve that she is afraid she will break down some time before John and discourage him. She says she is bearing up the whole family now. Dr. Marchand told Byron [????] today that John is a very sick man but he has hopes that he will yet [illegible] all right.
Mrs. Stearn [???] has invited me to a picnic at the Lake tomorrow. She and some Ladies on High St. are going. I accepted the invitation and we go about 9 o’clock and stay all day if we want to.
Fred is camping in the back yard tonight with Arthur Clarke and Carl Lash. It is now 10:30 and they are preparing for getting their breakfast out there. They are going to fry bacon, boil potatoes, make coffee and I don’t know what else they will have. Fred is enjoying it as much as the boys.
I will have to make this short as I must go to bed. I have to call the campers around five o’clock.
I am anxious to hear more about the dear boy.
Good night
Your loving Mother
Sat AM
I thought I had mailed this yesterday A.M. I was just looking up all letters to send to Eva and came across it. I will enclose hers to you that came this AM. I was beginning to feel a little anxious about her. I had a fine time at the Lake and an excellent dinner It almost frightened me to hear of Eva’s experience in Steubenville.
I of course opened yours to Eva and am sending it this morning. I hope Will will get along all right in exam [???].
I am sorry to hear of Lily coughing so much. Don’t let her sew any more, it is not good for her to sit and sew when she can’t get her sleep. When you finish yours, take a rest, then you do what you can at hers. Walk out often but don’t let her take those long walks. She hasn’t strength for that cough too, and fight mosquitoes.
Well I shall have to stop. I am baking. I saw Mr. B in grocery last eve. He said John was still improving slowly.

1.
My dear girls.
Obviously Alma is one of the dear girls, and I think that Lily Love must the other, judging from how she is mentioned in the letter. She is in the Non-Family Mabel Lil Steenie and Orestes page.
2.
Please accept my thanks for your beautiful reminder of my birth-day.
Mama Margaret turned 57 on August 15.
3.
John is improving but very slowly. I feel so sorry for Mrs. Braden.
The Bradens lived next door to the Stokeys in Canton: A husband and wife, and an ailing son, John. There's a Non-Family page for them on this website:
NON-FAMILY: THE BRADENS
Alas, John died in the month after this letter was written.
4.
I am anxious to hear more about the dear boy.
What dear boy? I don't know. Maybe John Braden?
5.
It almost frightened me to hear of Eva’s experience in Steubenville.
Eva was visiting the Hanlin cousins (Gracey connections) in Steubenville, Ohio, so I've added this to the document links for Provines and Graceys.
