Hotel Normandie,
San Francisco, Cal.,
April 3, 1911

Dear Folks and Eva,

Eva gets especial mention because this is a combination family letter and birthday letter.  We have been tempted to write every day but thought we ought to save the news up for the birthday letter.

In order that you will not have to skip around too much in reading this, I will start right in with the wedding.  Margaret arrived a little after noon nearly 3 hours late.  We went at once to the County Clerk’s office and got the license.  Margaret was very much fussed while I was very cool.  In fact I was so cool that I tried to beat the clerk out of his fee but I didn’t get away with it.  There was only one couple ahead of us.  We then went to the minister’s and were quietly married.  The minister’s wife and his mother were the witnesses.  We both were very cheerful and unfussed.  Alma would have roared.  I don’t know what the rest of the family would have done.  The minister was the Rev. Samuel Quickmire, pastor of the 1st M.E. Church, the oldest Protestant church in California.  I didn’t get to kiss the bride.  I did much better when I was only an usher at Lynn.  Margaret was disappointed because I took her on a cable car.  I didn’t want it to look like a funeral and I don’t think it did at any stage of the performance.

Being too late for the 2 o’clock train, we took the 3 o’clock train to Del Monte and arrived around 9:30 P.M.  It is said to be a beautiful resort in the Bay of Monterey.  We took a few snap shots so that we could recognize the place if we ever saw it again.  We left it with regret but with light hearts and purses Tuesday morning and arrived here about 12:30.  We commenced to look for a home and did so the rest of the day except for a short interruption for lunch.  We landed at the Normandie, very well satisfied.  The next day I moved my things from the Robins.  We have been getting settled in ever since and are now pretty well set.  I don’t think any one has taken us for bride and groom yet.  Our being to-gether so much at The Tremont has made us accustomed to having people look at us.  We don’t mind them a bit.

If you want to have a head of hair as nice as mine and perfectly free from dandruff use, use Glover’s Mange Remedy.  Leave it on about an hour, or longer if you can conveniently, and then wash it off.  I used Rexall Shampoo Paste for that part of it, but I guess whatever you ordinarily use is all right.  Margaret liked the results on mine so much that she is going to have me do her hair.

My dear Eva,

Will gave me this letter several days ago to finish.  He has given you a fair description of “The Day” and our stay at Del Monte but he did not tell you that we lost our way several times, in the Hotel grounds.  Del Monte is an ideal spot and we enjoyed every minute of our stay.  The Hotel was filled, a great many eastern tourists, worlds of style, beautiful women and stunning gowns.

We are just about getting settled in our new home.  We are very comfortable.  Will comes home to lunch.  We are about twenty-five minute ride from the office.  I meet him down-town very often and come home with him, we went to the Presidio Monday, he had an appointment with the dentist.  I wish you could see the child working at his music he really enjoys it and I am so proud of every thing he does.  I asked him if he was going to write and tell you he was happy?  He said, you would know it for you could read between the lines.  He certainly is a tease, we are going to look at Real Estate Sunday.  I am quite anxious to begin making investments.  I wish you could all come to California - I feel sure you would like it and besides there are some splendid chances for investments.  I feel you will come some day.  I must bestir my self and dress I am going down town with Will after lunch.  I had a dear letter from Laura yesterday, and we also received Alma’s letter.  I am going to write our dear little mother a separate letter.  Will you give her a big hug for me?  and tell her she must get well and strong so she can come west with Alma.  Will and I are looking forward to their visit; Eva dear do write me very soon, worlds of love for your own dear self from both

Eva turned 26 on April 3, 1911.

The minister was the Rev. Samuel Quickmire, pastor of the 1st M.E. Church, the oldest Protestant church in California.
I found a picture of him.  He looks like a nice guy, even if he didn't let Will kiss Margaret during the wedding.  He seems to have died in 1931.

Married in a Methodist Episcopal Church.  I learned that Christian Science does not consider marriage to be a sacrament.  There have been Christian Scientists who want a ceremony to be written up so that they could be married in a Christian Scientist church.

We took a few snap shots so that we could recognize the place if we ever saw it again.
33 years later, at Fernbank, Will made this same remark, and my mother - his daughter-in-law - noted it.  Thirty years after that, when I expressed curiosity about my grandfather's first wife, my mother told me about the remark.  Half a century after that, I read this letter.

We left it with regret but with light hearts and purses Tuesday morning and arrived here about 12:30.
The date of the wedding was March 22, so if they stayed at Del Monte until Tuesday, that was six nights.

Del Monte is an ideal spot and we enjoyed every minute of our stay.  The Hotel was filled, a great many eastern tourists, worlds of style, beautiful women and stunning gowns.
So Margaret the Milliner was paying more attention to the clothes than Will was.
