Sixteen-year-old Eva is visiting her Hanlin cousins in Steubenville, Ohio.
This is a nice enough letter, but not stellar. The highlight, I think, is Eva's not entirely satisfactory horse ride.

Dear Alma:-
In the last letter I got from mamma there was a letter from Laura, one from Lil and two from you so I have just read them all over and have settled down to answer them. I did write to mama and Lil the other day and I just got through writing to Laura so your turn has come.
I suppose you were somewhat surprised to learn that I was down here but I was so anxious to come that I just came. I came the 13th and I am going to tell you by dates what I have been doing ever since.
I did not do anything but rest the 14th. On the evening of the 15th John and I went to the Sunday School convention at “Sixteen”. It was lovely driving home.
Grace came home on that 16th. She had been in Toronto attending a teacher’s institute.
We made ice cream on the 17th. It was delicious choclate ice cream.
The 18th Grace and I went to church in Richond. June and Miss Allen, a friend of hers from Texas, were there and we went home with them from church. We stayed at Crawfords all day. Rachie [??] is not feeling very well for she has been working to hard. We came home after dark and it rained. I had on my blue dimity and it got all mussed but Grace got it all pressed out.
I guess the 19th is - blank. We washed on the 20th and in the evening went up to Dickey’s They are all getting so sour for they are so dissatisfied on the farm they want to be in town.
We went over to Mores’ on the 21st. You remember hearing Hanlins talk about Joshua Mores don’t you? That is the one. He was married in May to a niece of Mr. Crawford’s.
We did our ironing on the 22nd.
On the 23rd we went over to help Price’s. The threshers were there for supper. Mr. Price is a nephew of Aunt Mary’s husband you know. I thought they seemed like real nice people.
Yesterday (24th) I didn’t get cleaned up in the afternoon as I usually do. So along about five o’clock Grace began to wish that she had the mail. So it was that I got a horse back ride. I took “Lady Rebecca” so as to be safe. I was rather afraid at first but I soon got over that and enjoyed it very much. Going over I couldn’t make Beck go anyway but a very slow walk. But coming back I followed Orfa Dickey and every time she made her horse trot - she was in a buggy - Beck started on the trot and no amount of exertion used to stop her would have any effect so I just had to bob up and down on the saddle and stick on as best I could. I think I will try May the next time for she won’t do any more than walk and sometimes not even that.
Well that brings me up to today. I don’t know whether you have enjoyed my diary very much but it was the easiest way for me to write it.
Grace is going to take me where she is going to teach this winter some day soon.
And we are going to see the saw mill someday when it is running. It is in one of Winters woods.
Mr. Winters’ brother that lived over near “Sixteen” was killed the 8th and his daughter has been married since that. She was married last Monday. Orfa Dickey and Grace were trying to console each other because they are still left. I do hope that Lil will get to go to Oberlin this fall. I think it would be horrid for her to stay in Jersey City another winter.
I had almost forgotten to thank you for that collar. You need not have been afraid to tell me the price of it for I would have liked it anyway. I haven’t worn it yet though.
Write often. Goodbye.
With love,
Eva

1.
The Hanlins, whom Eva was visiting, were related to the Stokeys through Mama Margaret's mother - see the Provines & Gracey section or this website for a very little bit of information about them.
2.
In the last letter I got from mamma there was a letter from Laura, one from Lil and two from you
Lil must be LIly Love, who is in the Non-Family page for Mabel, Lil, Steenie, and Orestes. And isn't it typical that Eva got letters from her two sisters and from her mother, but nothing from her two brothers.
I think Alma must be in Oberlin, since Mama Margaret wrote her there on August 16.
3.
Grace came home on that 16th. She had been in Toronto attending a teacher’s institute.
Toronto, Ohio, not Toronto, Canada. About six miles from Steubenville.
4.
June and Miss Allen, a friend of hers from Texas, were there and we went home with them from church.
June is June Bracken or Brocken, who later lived with the Stokeys in Oberlin.
5.
Mr. Price is a nephew of Aunt Mary’s husband you know.
I don't know if this Aunt Mary is Aunt Mary Provines Hicks, Mama Margaret's older sister who at this time was living in Canton, I think. It wouldn't be surprising, since the Hanlins, being Gracey cousins, were just as much related to Aunt Mary Provines Hicks as they were to the Stokeys, so that maybe Mr. HIcks came from the Steubenville area. But I do not know.
6.
So it was that I got a horse back ride.
I happened to read this paragraph aloud to AG, and she fully sympathized with Eva, because she had ridden a horse at summer camp (Little Sirecho in southern New Hampshire) that wouldn't go faster than a walk.
7.
Mr. Winters’ brother that lived over near “Sixteen” was killed the 8th and his daughter has been married since that. She was married last Monday.
This strikes me as very weird. How was the brother killed? Eva always liked to tell a good story, so you'd think she would have something to say about it, but there's nothing.
8.
I do hope that Lil will get to go to Oberlin this fall. I think it would be horrid for her to stay in Jersey City another winter.
What's Lil doing in New Jersey? I think Alma's friend Mabel Watson was from New Jersey, so would that be related?
