Dear Alma,
What do you think of me, I am caterer of the Mess now and there are fourteen persons in it? If I ever leave the Army, I think I will have to start a cheap restaurant.
The kittens are getting along well. Tigre had three kittens the other day, and last night Black had four and Lobster five. So that for a short time to-day we had seventeen cats at this house. We kept Tigre’s three and the others joined the great majority. We gave Black and Lobster each one of Tigre’s and they think it is their own. To-night we bunched them and now we have three kittens with three mothers apiece. They are well cared for. You needn’t speak for one of the kittens for they are all engaged.
One of the new arrivals, Mrs. Brady, got a piano over in town. So we are getting quite musical over here. What is the name of that little thing from Mozart? I mean the Sonata. I want to get it for Mrs. Brady and Mrs. T’an to play. They both play very well I think. Of the few people whom I have heard play by ear, Mr.s T’an is the only one I could not detect at it. She can read very well too, I think.
To change the subject abruptly, what was the amount of the check I gave you when you were in New York? I forgot to note it in my check book so that now I don’t know how much money I have in the bank.
I went out quail shooting the other day and got one shot and missed. It was my very first attempt so don’t judge me too harshly. The dog I had was fat and got tired out in a few minutes and lay down in a pool of water and would not hunt anymore. There are plenty of quail in our back yard, so if I had a better dog I might of missed some more times.
Capt. Brady and I arranging to go out fishing Thursday night. So be prepared to hear marvelous tales. If you remember I went out once before and was sick as a dog most of the night. Speaking of dogs, what kind of dog is that of Mr. Love’s? I want to get one if they don’t come too high. Will you find out if you can if it will hunt? I am getting interested in hunting.
I managed to get through the financial crisis without losing any flesh.
With love,
Will.

Cabaña Barracks
October 22, 1901
Wikipedia says:
Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabaña, colloquially known as La Cabaña, is an 18th-century fortress complex, the third-largest in the Americas, located on the elevated eastern side of the harbor entrance in Havana, Cuba.
Speaking of dogs, what kind of dog is that of Mr. Love’s?
Mr. Love must the father of Alma's friend Lily Love.
I managed to get through the financial crisis without losing any flesh.
There apparently was a panic in May, five months before. It seems like a long time ago for when this letter was written, but maybe Alma had inquired, with reference to whether giving her some money would cause a problem for him. I wouldn't have thought Will was heavily involved with the stock market, but maybe Alma was worrying about banks failing, since this was 22 years before the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation was created. Or maybe this is referring to something else altogether. I don't know.
