Maggie (age 20), Billy (age 16), Kay (age 14), and Roger (age 12) have come up to Woods Hole for the summer. I think Kathleen is in Savannah helping to take care of her ailing father. Will is in Atlanta. Why? Given that he's retired, I don't know why, but maybe he wants to be available if Kathleen's family needs help. Or does he some sort of retirement gig going? Or is he needed to take care of the chickens in Atlanta?

Woods Hole
June 24.
Dear Daddy,
We got here last night soon after ten. We drove about 400 miles yesterday. We went through West Point and it certainly is a beautiful place. We got quite a thrill when we saw the cadets in formation.
The trunk came this afternoon and we unpacked it and I think everything was OK. We went for a swim this afternoon and the water was cold but I certainly did enjoy it.
Billy + Roger went fishing this afternoon + Billy caught about ten fish but Roger didn't catch any. I think all of us are going tomorrow morning.
How is Felix. We have all been wondering if you have been able to tame him any.
Aunt Alma's car is here and I think Aunt Eva is learning to drive it. Anyway she said I could learn.
The land around the cottage is very wet because the lot next door has been built up so. But I think Uncle Fred is going to fix it.
They're going to the mail now.
Love,
Margaret
P.S. Have you seen any cars?
P.S.S. I'm sending my library card - in case you need it.

1.
Dear Daddy,
Originally I thought it interesting that Maggie wrote only to her father, and not to both Will and Kathleen, but then I realized that Kathleen must be in Savannah, helping with her ailing father.
2.
We got here last night soon after ten. We drove about 400 miles yesterday.
It must have been Fred and Sibyl who drove the four kids up to Woods Hole. Sibyl had said in her postcard to Kathleen's mother, written from Orlando, Florida:
1933-06-06 POSTCARD FROM SIBYL TO ANN FARMER
We have had a fine trip so far, plan to arrive at Atlanta next Tuesday evening, the 13th. Visit for a few days with Will and hope the four children will be able to go with us to Woods Hole.
3.
How is Felix. We have all been wondering if you have been able to tame him any.
Who is Felix? A cat? Possibly named after Felix the Cat in cartoons? ("Felix the Cat! The wonderful, wonderful cat!") Wikipedia says:
Felix the Cat is a cartoon character created in 1919 by Pat Sullivan and Otto Messmer during the silent film era. An anthropomorphic young black cat with white eyes, a black body, and a giant grin, he is often considered one of the most recognized cartoon characters in film history. Felix was the first fully realized animal character in the history of American film animation.
4.
Aunt Alma's car is here and I think Aunt Eva is learning to drive it.
Oh golly. Aunt Eva driving. Does Maggie's "I think" mean that she's not sure how much Aunt Eva is learning? Well, Eva probably got a lot of practice on the road trip to Pennsylvania and Ohio that she and Alma took the following summer:
1934-08-10 LETTER FROM EVA TO KATHLEEN
5.
The land around the cottage is very wet because the lot next door has been built up so. But I think Uncle Fred is going to fix it.
I wonder what Fred was planning to do. Maybe AG will know.
LATER: No, AG didn't know. When I mentioned it, she talked about the raising of Fernbank, which didn't happen until 1946.
