I wonder what Will's arithmetical calculations on the back of the envelope were for.

My Dear Son,
This will be the last Sunday I will have without a girl about the house. Alma wrote that she would come home the last of the week. It is almost five weeks since she went and it seems a long time. Eva will come sometime after the 20th. She was going to sing at the rededication of a church in Richmond on the 20th. She has been having a good deal of experience down there singing, but she says she can still get her hat on with all the praise and compliments.
I miss her so much she is so original. Alma staid longer than she intended to on account of Steenie being away in Canada + would not return until the 15th, she wanted to have a visit with her. She will get that book of logarithms in New York and send it to you. Perhaps has already sent it.
It is just a month to-morrow since your last was received, and I hope there is another on the way.
Did you receive the papers I sent? I will send any kind of papers that you would like - just say what you want.
Papa gave two lectures at the Teachers Institute that met here just before school opened and performed an experiment explaining the Nebular hypothesis. He got a great deal of praise for his beautiful experiment.
Joseph Monnet a half brother of ex-post-master Monnet was arrested a few weeks ago for opening letters and taking money out of them. He confessed and is now in jail, in Cleveland I think. He had been in the P.O. about twelve years, and had a salary of eleven hundred dollars.
Laura will go down to Hanlins to spend a part of her vacation. She will get two weeks off. She has never been there + it will be a good place to rest.
I have been staying so closely at home since the girls are away that I feel as though I didn’t know any gossip to tell you. I had intended to visit Bradens but it is either too wet or too hot + I am too easily kept at home. I have been busy though putting away things for winter. Mrs. Stover gave us all the grapes we want to pick, so Fred picked a bushel on Labor Day and I about a half bu one day. What do you get that is new in the way of cooking. I suppose things are different every place you go.
How do you like the Philippines by this time? I am asked and I can only say that you don’t say anything about that. But I hope as long as there you will like it. I see in the Journal that the soldiers at Fort Logan H. Roots Ark. “are looking forward with pleasure to their return to the Philippines.” That sounds encouraging anyway, and I hope you are well contented and happy. The time is flying almost five months since you left the States.
Can’t you get your picture taken, I really want to see what you look like now. And don’t forget to let me know what you want for Christmas. It will be time for me to send by the time you answer this so don’t forget it.
I don’t know whether there is any vessel sailing soon or not but Fred says there are other boats that mail is carried in besides the government transports.
Write soon and often as you can. Are there any churches there except Catholic? Write another good long letter. God bless and keep you.
Your loving
Mother

1.
Alma staid longer than she intended to on account of Steenie being away in Canada + would not return until the 15th, she wanted to have a visit with her.
Alma was visiting Mabel with Lil. Steenie was another friend of theirs.Steenie was another friend of theirs. See the Non-Family page for Mabel, Lil, Steenie, and Orestes.
2.
She will get that book of logarithms in New York and send it to you. Perhaps has already sent it.
The book of logarithms keeps getting mentioned, but I'm not sure I've ever seen the letter in which Will first requested it. Here are the other two mentions:
3.
Papa gave two lectures at the Teachers Institute that met here just before school opened and performed an experiment explaining the Nebular hypothesis. He got a great deal of praise for his beautiful experiment.
Wikipedia says:
The nebular hypothesis is the most widely accepted model in the field of cosmogony to explain the formation and evolution of the Solar System (as well as other planetary systems). It suggests that the Solar System is formed from gas and dust orbiting the Sun.
Papa Charles was always interested in the sun, apparently. I think this must be the lectures that Fred helped him prepare for - see:The only time Mama Margaret ever mentions Papa Charles in her letters is when she's writing to Will in the Philippines, telling him the news.
4..
Joseph Monnet a half brother of ex-post-master Monnet was arrested a few weeks ago for opening letters and taking money out of them.
I googled but couldn’t find anything on Joseph Monnet.
5.
Laura will go down to Hanlins to spend a part of her vacation.
The Hanlins were Gracey cousins in Steubenville.
6.
I had intended to visit Bradens but it is either too wet or too hot + I am too easily kept at home.
The Bradens previously lived next door to the Stokeys in Canton. There's a non-family page for them on this website.
7.
I see in the Journal that the soldiers at Fort Logan H. Roots Ark. “are looking forward with pleasure to their return to the Phililppines.”
Wikipedia says:
Fort Logan H. Roots (usually referred to simply as Fort Roots) was a military base located in North Little Rock, Arkansas, set on a high promontory overlooking the Arkansas River.
8.
Write soon and often as you can. Are there any churches there except Catholic? Write another good long letter. God bless and keep you.
Mama Margaret's so desperate for letters from Will. And worried that he won't have any place to go to church.
