Dondi Aug. 11, 1927
My dearest Byl:
The McAllesters arrived about noon today and Wilson about 2:30. He got to Chilesso about 3 pm Wednesday. They did not let them have a minute alone while he was there!!! When they took a walk they had to have a boy as a chaperon. Dr. Cushman was on hand in the oujango and told them she was very hard of hearing! She wrote letters while they visited.
The Neipps were very rude and did what they could to break up the match. They tried to make her believe she was under contract to remain there three more years. I advised him to take her away before the end of the year if they made it too unpleasant for her. It is to be hoped that they will become a bit more reasonable and try to make her last year there one to remember pleasantly.
Roy is a real baby now and can sit up and look interested - has two teeth and considerably more hair than when he was here in May.
There was a letter from Alma, dated June 27 but apparently the pictures +c had not arrived yet. You will be interested in the cottage at Woods Hole. I was there for about two days before coming out here. She built it that summer and it was finished just in time for about two weeks use before school began in September.
We were all at Dart's this evening to visit with the McAllesters. Tucker had a copy of the Boletin Oficial with the new school law. That permits instruction in the native language in the first four grades and provides for trades schools which do not have to give the regular Portuguese courses such as have been presented previously. Perhaps by making the Trades classes primary in the [???illegible???] we can teach as side lines the things we really want to teach.
It would be hard for Tucker to adapt himself to such a program for he is entirely unable to comprehend the idea of manual training. He never had any and is perfectly helpless in any work using any tool other than a pen.
Good night my darling,
your Fred.
Dondi, Aug. 12 1927, 10 pm
My dearest Byl,
The McAllesters, Mrs. Dart and children got off for Sachikela this morning. Mary went too. The kesinga folks brought over a pie and Wilson and I went to Dart's for dinner. The pie was divided into three pieces.
Hastings came just after dinner to take the Tuckers and Pryors to Bailundo over Sunday. Miss Crosby went kesinga and will go to Bailundo Tuesday (or Monday) with Mrs. Netzes [???], Edith + Miss Dibble. They will bring Mrs. Childs back with them. I will be glad to have her come over at this time and save my making a visit so soon.
Dart will get out enough flooring tile to do the floors in the house before the rains. They will be laid on top of the present floor which is of a poor quality of tile - too soft.
Pryor has ordered a half dozen chairs and a dining table from the man who made Tucker's desk +c from the office. I think he does better work by far than DuCraux. I will bring up some catalogs for you to select the patterns for some furniture for our house. We can have him make that clothes press here with the mirrors. Swaddling can get us plate glass mirrors from Belgium quite reasonably. I also want good quality glass for our windows when we build.
I wish you were coming down here soon to see just how you want the house arranged. We can camp in the house I now occupy and make it do for the few months before furlough. I want to get our house well under way before we go home. The hardware should be ordered soon to insure its being on hand when needed. McAllester will send up the plan of the house there so we can work it over. Now goodnight my darling [blot] your Fred.
Saturday night - I had your nice letter soon after breakfast and folks had to wait until it was read thru twice. There was a woman waiting for an injection of emetic so the syringe was cooked until almost tender. The boy did not hurry back with the mail last evening as the Tuckers were away.
I printed some pictures this evening and have just gotten them into the wash. It will be nearly midnight before they are ready to be put out to dry. I did not make prints of all that were on the rolls but will do it later. It was more interesting to see what came out of the exposures made last Sunday. There are some good ones. That of you alone on the roll we finished near the house is very good. I will print more of them to send home.
You must not feel to sorry about my breakfast for there were still a lot of peanuts in my pocket when I got to Dondi. Between Galangue and the Gueldi [???] my lunch was from the peanuts Elizabeth roasted for me and there were some left for munching while out hunting the following week. Last Wednesday I was near the Cuquema river 10 kilometers this side of Vata Silva Porto [???] before I began to nibble. The peanuts you roasted for me at Galangue were part of my lunch between Dondi and Sachikela. I don't eat much while travelling but I like to have something to nibble on from time to time.
You know my sentiments about the date and since we will be seeing each other frequently between now and the wedding day the earliest date you mentioned might do. As to the form of service have it just as you wish it - one two or three as you like. I will be happy to tell you and the world that I love you alone and will love honor obey and promise you anything in Portuguese, English, Umbundu and any other language just so its you and I can see you coming into my own home and reigning there. As to the home boards there is no question. You have already been budgeted by the General Board without their having had definite word. Tucker had $1500 added to this year's budget to provide for just that thing. If it were once intimated that you yourself would rather put the wedding off I would not urge you to reconsider. It occurs to me you are just a bit inclined to sacrifice yourself without really making it any easier for those you wish to help.
Mrs. Childs is coming over here on Wednesday so I will not go to Bailundo. Don't forget to write just because I might not be here the day the train gets in. From the time you said you were really disappointed when I let a train go without mailing a letter I have been careful to write at least a sheet if there was a chance to send a letter. Wilson has never sent any letters to Chilesso by mail. They have depended on the carriers who came here for loads +c. I have advised him to use the mails too and write oftener. He admitted rather sheepishly that he re-read her letters frequently. He does not seem to realize that the things he does are not new to mankind in the same situation.
I will adopt your style of getting a last line in on the margins. It is now 12:45 so goodnight my darling, your affectionate Fred.

1.
The McAllesters arrived about noon today and Wilson about 2:30. He got to Chilesso about 3 pm Wednesday. They did not let them have a minute alone while he was there!!!
Wilson was engaged to a girl named Amelia, so it was Wilson and Amelia who were not allowed to have a minute alone.
2.
Dr. Cushman was on hand in the oujango and told them she was very hard of hearing! She wrote letters while they visited.
Dr. Mary Cushman was another medical missionary. As for the oujango, the word crops up elsewhere but I don't know the exact meaning.
3.
Roy is a real baby now and can sit up and look interested - has two teeth and considerably more hair than when he was here in May.
Roy was born January 12, 1927, the son of two other missionaries, Mr. and Mrs. Childs.
4.
There was a letter from Alma, dated June 27 but apparently the pictures +c had not arrived yet. You will be interested in the cottage at Woods Hole. I was there for about two days before coming out here. She built it that summer and it was finished just in time for about two weeks use before school began in September.
So it took about 6 weeks for Alma's letter to get from Massachusetts to Dondi, Angola.
I mention this letter in the Fernbank page - FERNBANK
5.
There are lots of other people mentioned here. No need to detail them all right now. Eventually I'll say something about them on the Non-Family Mission Folks page.
