Calistoga, April 15, ‘10

Just got here by stage after a 33 mile trip.  I came over the saddle in the mountain at about the center of the picture.  It is a great trip.  Lots of tourists make it a little later on.

Mama Margaret was visiting Eva and her husband of six months, Frank Evans.

Just got here by stage after a 33 mile trip.
​Wikipedia says:
In 1868 Brannan's Napa Valley Railroad Company's track was completed to Calistoga. This provided an easier travel option for ferry passengers making the journey from San Francisco. With the addition of railroad service, Calistoga became not only a destination, but also the transportation hub for the upper valley and a gateway to Lake and Sonoma Counties. A 6-meter diorama of this early Calistoga can be seen in the Sharpsteen Museum.

Will had previously stayed in Middletown on this trip - see:
Calistoga is about seventeen miles south of Middletown, and Middletown's main street is named Calistoga Street.

There's a town 15 miles north of Middletown called Lower Lake.  I imagine that Will took the Napa Valley Railroad from San Francisco to Calistoga, and then went by stage (stagecoach? in 1910?  wow!) to Middletown for a night, by stage to Lower Lake for a night, and then back 33 miles by stage to Calistoga.

Lots of tourists make it a little later on.
A little later on in the season maybe?  Is that what Will means?

Eva apparently received the postcard in New York after Mama Margaret had gone back to South Hadley.  She sent the postcard to Mama Margaret, and must have enclosed it with a letter, since there's no forwarding address on the postcard.  See:
