Kathleen was living in Cincinnati, having been married to Will three months earlier.
News of World War I. Zeppelins and tanks. I assume the enclosures that WJ mentions are from the Farmer family in England, but we don't have them, so I can't be sure.

Dearest Bobs,
My sending you the enclosures should enable you to receive them 12 hours earlier than if they waited for the homefolks to write you. There has been a little going out recently and that has thrown them on letter writing. On Saturday we visited the “Odeon” + “Arcadia” at the former one we saw Ibsen’s “Pillars of Society” - very good and at the latter some nondescript piece. However it was like the boy who had marmalade on both sides of his bread - it economized the bread. I mean going to two shows in one evening. Yesterday we supped at the Sagdens + passed a pleasant hour. It has been deliciously cool but is now warming up again, like Savannah. So glad they got two Zepps this time - the crew of one was burned like that the other day, + I hope it will serve to affect the morale of the crews of the remaining vessels. By the way it is reported that the Germans have protested to the Red Cross authorities against our using “Tanks” on the ground that they are contrary to the rules of civilized warfare. Can’t they whine when hurt? And what about their logic?
Much love to you both
From your father

1.
Dearest Bobs,
"Bobs" was a name for Kathleen inside the Farmer family. I don't know where it came from.
2.
we saw Ibsen’s “Pillars of Society”
The Pillars of Society was an 1877 play, nothing new.
3.
So glad they got two Zepps this time
Zeppelins:
On the night of 2/3 September 1916 the German army launched their first and only coordinated Zeppelin attack on London. It was an utter disaster, largely because of atrocious weather conditions and poor navigation.
I didn’t get exact details as to exactly which two Zeppelins WJ is talking about.
4.
By the way it is reported that the Germans have protested to the Red Cross authorities against our using “Tanks” on the ground that they are contrary to the rules of civilized warfare.
Wikipedia says in its article about tanks in World War I:
The first use of tanks on the battlefield was the use of British Mark I tanks by C and D Companies HS MGC at the Battle of Flers-Courcelette (part of the Battle of the Somme) on Friday 15 September 1916, with mixed results.
That was just ten days before this letter was written.
