Guane, Province of Pinar del Rio, Cuba,
December 16, 1907.
Dear Eva,
The enclosed is an example of what my cook turned me out for supper this evening. I don’t know what he calls them. Callahan, the cook at our other camp makes the same thing and calls them “flapjacks”. What would you do if a cook turned you out anything of the sort? Don’t you think it a [crossed out: scabby mangey snide trick] very improper thing to do? That and hard work are the reasons I weigh only 168 lbs. You must get after Lycopœ dia when she gets home. She wrote that she was “afraid she was getting fat”. I know she must be fat already. Don’t let her sleep too late in the morning and chase her up and down stairs. I [crossed out: stumped stuck] baffled her with a botanical name a few days ago. It was “Bombax Ceiba,L.”. It is the name of a kind of tree that grows down here. I got it from a Spanish dictionary. You must [crossed out: spring it on her] use it in her presence.
I have taught our kitten the standard jumping tricks. We have a small, fat, yellow [crossed out: purp] pup. He has a great time playing with the kitten. He weighs about three times as much as she does. They take turn about picking on one another. When the [crossed out: purp] pup strikes the kitten he bowls her over everytime. The kitten howls and bites and scratches but as soon as the [crossed out: purp's] pup’s back is turned she jumps on him. The [crossed out: purp] pup also tackles the pig occasionally but the pig is too [crossed out: dopy] phlegmatic too make him a good playmate. We washed the kitten xy the other day and got rid of most of his fleas. The next day he seemed to have just as many as he had at first. He got them from the [crossed out: purp] pup. This is a story with a moral. It shows the result of having evil associates. I hope that Orestes will profit by the kitten’s experience in choosing his playmates. I failed to do so. I slept up at our other camp the last two nights. They have fleas up there and I had them in my cot too. It certainly was annoying. I tried to get some pyrethrum powder in Guane the other day but they had none. Please send me some for Christmas if you can get it without spoiling your reputation.
I went out yesterday with Mr. Ward looking for iron ore or gold!!! We did not get any but had a pretty good time and got a few plants for Lycopœdia. I will enclose some of them if I don’t forget it. I have started raising tobacco. I have fourteen plants set out in boxes. They have a hard time of it. I kept them for about a week before I set them out. The first two days they were not even in water. I have one plant that I am trying too raise without any soil. I have it in a bootle of water in which I throw tobacco ashes and [crossed out: snipes] cigarette butts. It is not thriving. It is probably too young. This is another lesson for Orestes.
There is a 5”x7” camera here to take pictures of the road. I got 2 dozen plates and expect to take a few pictures on my own account. I haven’t taken any official pictures yet. They are developed at Marianao and they keep the negatives there. I believe they send you on picture for your trouble. I want to send these negatives in to Fred to develop if he will do so. I would like a couple of prints of each that are any good.
With love,
Your batty, beansy, buggy, bughouse,
Bill.

Will writes the happiest letters from Cuba!
Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to do a strikethrough in the text editor for this website.
The enclosed is an example of what my cook turned me out for supper this evening. I don’t know what he calls them. Callahan, the cook at our other camp makes the same thing and calls them “flapjacks”.
Did Will really send home a pancake in the mail?
You must get after Lycopœ dia when she gets home.
Lycopœdia is clearly Alma.
I hope that Orestes will profit by the kitten’s experience in choosing his playmates.
Orestes Cleveland is a boy staying with the Stokeys while attending school in Oberlin. He is in the Non-family page for Mabel, Lil, Steenie, and Orestes.
