Dear Mother,
I have been down here since the second taking the place of Lieut. Leeds. He has had tuberculosis and about two weeks ago he had a hemorrhage and then had three more in the next four days. He had no more after that and seems to be improving. He has had to lie almost perfectly still so that the doctors have not been able to make a thorough examination.
This is a great health resort and he had been sent here from the government tuberculosis hospital at Fort Bayard.
I was requested to tell you that I had discontinued smoking at the end of the fiscal year (June 30). The request was made by Mrs. Stannard, the wife of Mr. Stannard, who is the inventor of Stannards CP (Celery Pepsin) Headache Tables (CP on every tablet). I told her that you would be worried for fear I would start again if I told you but she insisted. She is very much opposed to cigarettes. She said she would rather have Mr. S. come home drunk than to have him smoke cigarettes. She tried to get me to swear off for good but I wouldn’t do it and compromised by making it until the end of September. I suppose you would be interested to hear more about her. She says she is 44 years old and doesn’t mind telling it as anyone can see how old she looks, and she doesn’t consider that it would be at all creditable to look older than she is. She has a lots of business in her (like the girls). She was a lone widow at the time of the Chicago World’s Fair. She built an apartment house that could be used as a hotel, kept it so full in the fair that she had to sleep in the office,

We don't have the full letter. Barb scanned what we have and says: “could not find a continuing page”, which is a pity because I would have liked to read more about Mrs. Stannard.
As for Lieutenant Leeds, he probably didn't have tuberculosis since he survived until 1960. And the Los Angeles Herald gave a different account of his health issue:
1910-07-30 NEWSPAPER ITEM ABOUT WILL
It says he had a sprained ankle that completely undermined his health.
It was while Will was substituting for Lieutenant Leeds that he met his first wife Margaret in the Los Angeles boarding house where they were both living. And since she was a Christian Scientist, she would surely have said that the problem was not tuberculosis and it was not a sprained ankle; it was Error.
