Kay writes home from Columbia Journalism School to her father and to her Aunt Eva. We get a rare mention of the family cook/maid in Atlanta.

3/9/41 Sunday night -
Dear Daddy + Aunt Eva,
Thank you so much for the leter + the check, - all of which were greatly appreciated. When Daddy refers to AE, I can't help but think of the poet. Undoubtedly the abbreviation is a great typewriter saver however, so I guess I should get used to it.
By the way if Daddy thinks his typing is bad, he should see some at Journalism. Then he'd know better.
I'm going to send you a copy of last week's Front Page. Unfortunately none of my handiwork is represented. I think the "Killer Hunt" story is a riot. It's actually true. The boy is considering suing the Front Page just for fun.
You will notice that all errors - such as the wrong count for headlines - have been left in the paper. How do you like the headline about the bullfight? I think it is pretty clever. In fact I think the whole paper is rather good considering everything.
I wish I had had Billy's address as possibly he could have come over to N.Y. I only know his Michigan address, however. I guess, though, he'd come over if he could anyway without an engraved invitation.
The man who gives the radio course is a veritable Simon Legre. Last time he had had some of the papers read + recorded just as though they were on a regular radio news broadcast. He had selected a couple of papers to be read as "horrible" specimens. Then he read some that were supposed to be good. Strangely enough, he read Miss Stokey's among those. He said mine was a really professional job. Imagine my surprise. However there's no telling what he'll say about my next paper. In fact he was so mean to a couple of students that someone reported him to the Dean.
I almost forgot to tell you that I took myself to see Helen Hayes + Maurice Evans in "Twelfth Night" last Tuesday night. It closed this week + I wanted to see it before it did close. I enjoyed it very much.
Thank you once again for the letter + the check.
Please tell Lucy I miss her good cooking. I was much amused to hear about the reason for James downfall etc. Also to hear the "Mrs. Evans calling Mrs. Evans" incident.
Much love always,
Scarlett O'Stokey

When Daddy refers to AE, I can't help but think of the poet.
AE Housman, I assume.
I'm going to send you a copy of last week's Front Page.
Alas, it's not with the letter.
The man who gives the radio course is a veritable Simon Legre.
The villain from Uncle Tom's Cabin, of course. It ought to be Simon Legree, but I looked and looked and couldn't find a second e there.
I almost forgot to tell you that I took myself to see Helen Hayes + Maurice Evans in "Twelfth Night" last Tuesday night.
I found a New York Times review of this by Brooks Atkinson on 11/20/1940. He loved Maurice Evans (age 39 at the time) as Malvolio.
Please tell Lucy I miss her good cooking.
So whatever Eva did for Will in the way of housekeeping, she didn't do the cooking.
Much love always,
Scarlett O'Stokey

So we have Scarlett O'Hara and Simon Legree in the same letter.
