Dear Girls,
I am sure it seems a very long time ago that I left Canada, but the time passed very quickly. At last I am settled in a very comfortable home in Lisbon, where we expect to stay for a few months at least. I enjoyed my visit in England very much, spending my time with relations in Plymouth. I was not a good sailor. But to my surprise and delight I had been provided with two good friends all the way from Montreal to Southampton. They were both keenly interested in our work. Miss Baily from Montreal and Mrs. Willard from Ottawa. Many times during the voyage I felt very thankful for such good friends, and I realized that God who oversees every thing had been guiding us. I enjoyed my visit in England very much, spending my time with relations in Plymouth. On the [???] I saw Drake's Monument and on a very clear day we saw the Eddystone Lighthouse very dimly about. Dear Girls, I have thought of you all so many times, and I regret very much that I have not written a letter to you before this. I did appreciated so much the keen interest you showed in "our" work just before I left home. I wish to thank you also for the steamer letters I received. I was confined to my cabin during almost the entire trip, I enjoyed them very much, and they were very bright and interesting, and I feel that I know you personally now. I am anxious to let you know how fortunate I have been and how God provided for my needs and comforts as he promises to do for all. In Southampton I met Miss Mary Hurlbut, who is a teacher, being sent out to Angola by the Amer. B. I love her so much. She is a very bright, jolly girl and her merry laugh is so cheery. You may rest assured that I enjoy her company and am very thankful for Mary as my friend. I enjoyed my boat trip from England to Portugal and saw many interesting things. We spend one Sunday on board, which was a beautiful bright sunny day. We docked for some hours at Coruna, and it was very interesting to watch the small flat bottomed boats, come out from the coast of Spain, laden with oranges, grapes, bananas, figs and nuts, which the women, who were very picturesque in bright shaws, kerchiefs and aprons, tried to sell to the passengers at the back of the steamer. There was so much [illegible] and excitement over the sales that it did not seem very much like Sun. But Mary and I enjoyed the new scenes surrounding us, and were very thankful for the beautiful day, the bright blue sky, removing any feelings of homesickness. |

When we arrived in Lisbon, we were met by Mr. Swan, who was certainly very kind and willing to do all he could for us. We had a very helpless feeling when we landed among these strange, noisy people, because we were not able to understand them, and were quietly relieved when Mr. Swan came up to us. However our baggage came through the customs without any trouble whatever.
That first evening there was another surprise in store for us. Mr. Simango heard we had arrived and came to see us. To our great delight we found that Mr. Simango and her mother were also here for some months to study before going out to Portuguese East Africa. No doubt you all have met Dr. Agguy. Mr. + Mrs. Simango are very much like him, and we certainly have many good times together. Mary + I have been fortunate enough to get a very nice room, in the same house with them, so we are all quite comfortable and happy at our new work. We have made our room quite cozy and inviting with our own pictures and personal things. Mr. Swan expressed much exclamation of surprise and delight when we first showed him the results of our labours. I have appreciated the two silver vases from the London Mission Board so much, because we have been able to have flowers in our room continually. The [illegible] the this country are so beautiful and you see them whichever way you turn. No doubt you are wondering how we are getting along with the language. It is quite difficult, and it keeps me very busy studying and doing the exercises our teacher gives us. We have been very fortunate in finding a good teacher and we attend lectures at the Y.W.C.A. + services at the church for Portuguese which we find helpful. We can understand some words although we cannot follow the speaker yet and it does seem slow. Just here I would advise you that are looking forward to taking up work in Angola as teachers or nurses to become well grounded in French + Latin and you will not have so much difficulty with Portuguese. I do hope you are praying that the way be opened up for some of you to take up work for our Master in foreign fields. You will find it very interesting and I am sure you will be happy and enjoy it. Mr. Simango has told us many interesting things about his country + people. About two weeks ago we went down to the warf and met Mr. + Mrs. children and Mr. + Mrs. McDowell on their way back to America from Dondi, and it was certainly good to see them. I enjoyed the afternoon on board the steamer very much and they invited us to stay to dinner. We had a very jolly time and also heard about our house to be, which we are so anxious to reach. |
