PAPA CHARLES AS GOVERNMENT WEATHER OBSERVER: THE TOUR: ~INTRODUCTION~---the list of links---other links---site navigation
Papa Charles, the father of the Five Stokey Siblings, was not single-minded. The documents that are in this website show that he had several different interests, as well as a couple of issues that developed in his life. I've separated the documents related to them into different Tours so as to get a handle on them.
The Tours related to Papa Charles are:
Now for the subject of this particular Tour:
Papa Charles was the US government weather observer for the Canton, Ohio area from 1882 until 1910. This was by no means a full-time job; he continued working for the Canton Public Schools.
How did he get the weather observer appointment? I don't know. He was a teacher of foreign languages, so he surely would not have been the first person anybody would think of for the job. But he was interested in science, and he was interested in politics, so perhaps one of his politician friends suggested him for the role. But, again, I don't know.
Papa Charles had a weather station in his back yard that Alma remembered fondly, according to AG. He didn't do any weather predictions; he only observed the weather, and sent his observations to the government. Since he was a colorful (that's my go-to word for Papa Charles) personality, he got mentioned a lot in newspaper items - more than I've included here.
As is standard with the Tours, each stop in the Tour has links to the previous stop and the next stop in the Tour.
