GLADY'S TABLECLOTH: ~INTRODUCTION~---picnic pictures---images of the tablecloth---related pages---site navigation
We start with a couple of pictures of the tablecloth in use. I wish I had more.
I uploaded the tablecloth images here on Wednesday, August 14, 2024. I'm planning to list the names that are on the Tablecloth, with some explanation of who they are, and also to reorganize the images, not to mention writing up an explanation about the Tablecloth...but all that will take some time. I'm starting to note down in the captions some of the names as I see them in the pictures, and labelling the squares in the pictures. More on that below.
My second cousin Fred took these photographs in front of Vagabond House after Glady died in 1988, with the help of Glady's cousin Ed Golterman and Ed's wife - was she Ann? I can't remember. Anyway, Fred handed around CD-ROMs of the photographs, correctly but misleadingly labeled "Green Tablecloth". Thirty-five years later, when I decided the Tablecloth belonged on this website, we all knew we had the CD-ROM somewhere, but none of us knew where, except for Fred's youngest brother Alan, who snail-mailed me a thumb drive of the images, since they wouldn't all fit in an email, even after he zipped them. Eternal thanks to both Fred and Alan.
I looked over the images as I uploaded them, half the time thinking, "I don't recognize these names," and half the time exclaiming, "There's Grandpa! And look, there's Uncle Fred!" and so on. I found four of the Five Stokey Siblings: Will, Alma, Fred, and Eva. Laura isn't there because the only time she was in Woods Hole was in 1929, before Glady ever came to Woods Hole and met the Stokeys.
Back in the beginning - 1950 or before that - there would have been very few names on the tablecloth, but Glady had the idea, and it grew. So, dear Website Visitor, I ask you: Wouldn't it be nice if you yourself did something like this? And no, I'll never do it myself. Nobody in their right mind would ever come to my house for a meal.
To be continued.

Glady is at the end of the table. The only other person I recognize is the woman at the front right with her hand at her mouth. I'm quite sure that her name was Margery, but I can't remember her surname, and the only Margery or Marjorie that I can find on the tablecloth doesn't seem right at all. I think she lived with Dorothy Hope Marvin and that they both were doctors, and there were big dogs - Airedales? - but I'm not really sure.

The tablecloth is 17 squares across by 6 down. Each square gets an ID. The following should give an idea:
A-01 is the square in the upper left-hand corner.
A-17 is the square in the upper right-hand corner.
F-01 is the square in the bottom left-hand corner.
F-17 is the square in the bottom right-hand corner.
And so on for the squares in between. I'm working on getting close-up screenshots for every square, in every photograph where it appears completely. It's a project.
