Here are the only three early letters that we have from Fred. They were written (as is indicated in the Tour name) to his older brother, Will. His daughter, AG, had photocopies of them that she gave to me. It looked as though the originals got soaked, so that someone photocopied them and then threw out the originals as non-salvageable. I wondered about that, and about how AG got hold of the letters, but at the time I didn't ask.
We do have the original envelope for the middle letter. As I finished up scanning this bunch of stuff, a stamp fluttered out from somewhere, and it appeared to have come from the envelope, so I rescanned the envelope with the stamp in place, and then stuck the stamp inside the envelope.
Later, I learned from my cousin Barbara that there had been, at some point, a flood (due to a leaky pipe, I think she said) at Aunt Kay's house, and that the boxes of family documents were affected. So it seems likely to me that these letters were in Aunt Kay's keeping, and that after the flood she photocopied them and sent the photocopies to AG. Barbara still has more stuff that she hasn't given me (I want it, of course, but I've more than enough to do with what I've already got, so I'm not complaining), and I'm curious to see if duplicate photocopies of these letters are among that stuff. Wouldn't it be cool if more letters from Fred from this era turned up? It seems unlikely, however.
Anyway, from these letters I learned that Will helped to finance Fred's education as he had helped to finance Alma's and Eva's. I daresay he sent checks to Laura as well, but I don't supposed I'll ever know for sure. And I also learned that Fred and Laura were interested in, and slightly worried about, Eva's sudden engagement to Frank Evans.
As is standard with the Tours, each stop in the Tour has links to the previous stop and the next stop in the Tour.
