Wailuku, April 25th
I certainly did notice that I had no mail but periodicals, bills and notices of various kinds when we returned from Hawaii April 20. - and nothing more except a letter from Fredda.
We are now packing (at intervals) to leave Maui April 29. Our address April 29-May 20 will be
215 Liliuokalani Ave
c/o Mrs. Louis Frobal
Honolulu 15, Hawaii
and then we set off on the Lurline (Matson Line) for the 4-1/2 day trip to San Francisco - a contrast to the 10 day trip from S.F. to Honolulu. This week we had a beautiful trip to the Haleakala crater rim, 10,000 ft. high and saw the Silversand, a plant which grows nowhere else - and for $1.00 we all became Life Members of Hui Ahinahina at the Park Director's Office. Yesterday we took a trip around the west end of Maui - a rough narrow road, but Mr. Cushman who has done it before drove our Pontiac and got us safely around it and around the [illegible]. We made 2 calls in Lahaina, on the way home, and came home with 10 limes and 1/2 a loaf of banana + nut bread from Mrs. Tompkins. We leave for Honolulu on the 29th.

I don't think it's "nothing more", but I can't decipher the word after "nothing."

More illegibility from Alma, the internet told me that the ship's name had to be Lurline.

'Ahinahina is the Hawaiian word for silversword. Hui means meet in Hawaiian, so Hui Ahinahina must be the Silversword Club.

Yesterday we took a trip around the west end of Maui - a rough narrow road, but Mr. Cushman who has done it before drove our Pontiac and got us safely around it and around the [illegible].
Still more illegibility. I googled on "road hazards in the west of Maui, Hawaii" and received no clues, but Google AI told me:
In West Maui, the primary road hazards include the extremely narrow, winding, and unpaved sections of the Kahekili Highway (Route 340) north of Kapalua, which feature blind corners, steep cliff drop-offs with no guardrails, unreliable cellphone service, and frequent single-lane stretches that require reversing alongside sheer drop-offs.
Later, it said:
Rental Car Restrictions: Because of these severe hazards, the majority of Maui rental car companies expressly prohibit driving on Kahekili Highway (as well as the Piilani Highway/back road to Hana in East Maui). Violating this contract means you are financially responsible for any towing or accidents, which are extremely costly and slow in these remote areas.
If that's how the West Maui roads are now, then they surely were no better, and probably worse, back in 1959.
