Approaching Carlsbad, N.M. Jan. 6th 10 a.m.
We spent last night in Hobbs, N.M. just across the Texas border, and having gained an hour by going into Mountain Time, we had a long sleep. It is decidedly warmer, and for the first time, my feet are warm while on the road. We are enjoying the Black Walnut Cake - Lenette's at present, but we shall go at mine later. We have it for our afternoon lunch - we no longer stop for Tea since we learned that we must make San Francisco to get our boat Jan. 13th. We also have mints which Margaret sent. We left with apples in the car, but the last ones froze. Lenette is doing all the driving and stands it well. We made 340 miles yesterday without driving after dark, but the sun did not set until 6:00 Central Time. This is desolate country but there are mountains in the distance to relieve the flatness. Aside from the cold which we have had, this is luxury traveling for me. Geoffroy stops for our motels, Lenette drives and tends to food. A.G.S.

1.
We are enjoying the Black Walnut Cake
The black walnut cake was a Christmas present. See Alma's Christmas letter to Eva: The Black Walnut cake came Tuesday and we had some for dessert for dinner.
Eva gave it to everybody, year after year. I remember eating it at my grandparents's house during the week after Christmas.
2.
We also have mints which Margaret sent.
I couldn't make out the "mints" and I wasn't sure that Margaret was Maggie, but Alma's Christmas letter to Eva helped me out:
Maggie + Al sent me mints - 2 kinds: Clara says they are special.
I didn't find it until after I had done the audio recording, and I don't really feel like doing that over again.
3.
Geoffroy stops for our motels
Stops or shops? It sounds as though they didn't make reservations in advance, so maybe it was shops, but there weren't smartphones back then, so I don't know how he would have done it. I decided that maybe "stops" meant that he did the registering.
4.
Clara isn't mentioned in this postcard, but she was there, sitting in the back seat with Alma (and no doubt, with her arthritis, suffering from the cold the way Alma did), so I'm including this in her documents.
