1940
- December 14: Will's wife Kathleen dies. Eva moves down to Atlanta to keep house for Will.
- Spring: Fred gets a gaugemaker job at the Springfield Armory.
- Summer: Alma is at Fernbank. Not sure about anybody else.
- December: With the US now in World War II, Will is appointed executive officer for the Atlanta civilian defense zone.
- June: Alma retires. With the election of a new mayor (Hartsfield), Will resigns from the Atlanta civilian defense zone outfit.
- September: Alma starts teaching at Smith College for a year.
- Will attends the wedding of his younger son, Roger, to Edie.
- Summer at Fernbank: Will, Eva, and Alma. Also Edie, I think
- Summer at Fernbank: Will, Alma. Eva, Maggie, and Edie, and occasionally Fred and AG.
- Summer at Fernbank: Will, Alma, Eva, and probably Edie.
- With World War II over, Will's sons Bill and Roger, along with Roger's wife Edie, spend Christmas in Atlanta with Will and Eva.
- Major improvements at Fernbank. (This may be 1945, not 1946.)
- January: Alma breaks her arm after falling on the ice. Full recovery.
- April: Will's daughter Maggie visits him and Eva in Atlanta with Will's first grandchild.
- January: Will's younger daughter Kathleen is married in Cambridge, Massachusetts. AG is maid of honor. Alma, Fred, Laura, and Eva are there, along with Bill & Grace and Roger & Edie.
- Summer at Fernbank. Will, Alma, Fred, and Eva are there, with visits from Roger and Edie and their first child.
