Dr. Stokey to Address Mount Holyoke Club
Chairman of Botany Department at College Will Speak at Silver Tea on Thursday Evening.
Dr. Alma G. Stokey, chairman of the botany department of Mt. Holyoke College, will speak at a silver tea to be given by the Springfield Mt. Holyoke Club at the home of Miss Nellie E. Brown at Dartmouth Street, Thursday at 3 o'clock. The subject of her talk will be "A Botanist in the Tropics."
A graduate of Oberlin College, Dr. Stokey holds her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. She has been associated with Mt. Holyoke since 1908, first as an instructor and then as an associate professor. In 1916 she was promoted to the rank of full professor.
Especially interested in the work of the Women's Christian College, Madras, India, Prof. Stokey has twice obtained leaves of absence from Mt. Holyoke, from 1929 to 1931, and again in 1936 to 1937, to serve as visiting professor on the staff of that college.
The silver tea is a project of the ways and means committee for the benefit of the Student Aid Fund. Mrs. Elliott Rice of Wellington Street is chairman of this committee.
