I don't know exactly when school was over for the year at Mount Holyoke in 1936, but it is clear that Alma didn't waste any time getting on a transatlantic ship.

Miss Alma G. Stokey of South Hadley, Mass., was among the passengers sailing from New York after midnight last night. Miss Stokey was bound for the American Christian College in Madura, India.

Miss Alma G. Stokey of South Hadley, Mass., was among the passengers sailing from New York after midnight last night. Miss Stokey was bound for the American Christian College in Madura, India.
It should be Dr, not Miss, but at least they got the middle initial right. And it's the Women's Christian College, not the American Christian College. And I figure "Madura" was the closest they could get to "Madras". Oh, well, at least they knew she was going to India. But this was the society page. Two weeks later, the section of the newspaper dealing with college stuff did better:

It is interesting that the ship left in the middle of the night. These days cruise ships always leave in the late afternoon.
