This newspaper cutting was kept by the family, so I don't have its exact date, or what newspaper it was in. For the page name, I'm giving it a date of September 5, 1933, but that's just an estimate.

FARMER'S ASHES BE SCATTERED AT SEA
BE CARRIED FROM SAVANNAH ON STEAMSHIP AND GIVEN TO ATLANTIC
Carrying out the desire and wish of the late William J. Farmer as expressed in his will, the members of Mr. Farmer's family and his close associates are preparing to scatter his ashes to the four winds far out in the Atlantic Ocean with a Masonic burial ceremony.
When the steamship Georgian makes its next trip across the Atlantic, probably in November, the ashes of Mr. Farmer will be carried to sea by the captain, who is a Mason. At some point in the Atlantic, to be determined by the captain, they will be removed from the urn in which they rest and scattered over the waters of the Atlantic.
Mr. Farmer, who was a well-known naval stores man in Savannah, had a great desire to avoid being buried. He directed that his body should be cremated and that the ashes be disposed of in the manner indicated.
The body has been cremated and the ashes are now in Savannah. They will be retained here until the departure of the steamer which is to transport them out to sea. The captain of the Georgian, it is reported, has consented to hold a Masonic memorial service at sea in accordance with the expressed wish of the deceased.

This is a stop in the Tour of pages, mostly death notices and obituaries, about deaths among the Stokey family, in-laws, and friends.

We have something or other about WJ's Mason membership, but I haven't uploaded it so far. From a brief googling, I gather that Christian Science doesn't make a big religious deal about funerals, so the Masonic burial would be OK.

I looked around for information on the Georgian, but couldn't find a ship of that name that fit with this information.

Two years later, WJ's elder daughter Ruth was cremated - see: It was done in Macon, at the only crematorium in Georgia at that time. I assume WJ was cremated there as well. Now I'm wondering if I might be able to find out if WJ's wife Annie was cremated or buried.
