The Amherst Nature club will meet Tuesday evening at the 7.30 in Fernald hall on the State college campus. Dr. Alma Stokey, professor of botany, at Mount Holyoke college will give an illustrated lecture on "India, Java and Formosa."

Formosa (a Portuguese name) is usually known as Taiwan (a Chinese name) today.
I googled: "how far is taiwan from india"
Answer: about 2700 miles.

Answer: about 2400 miles.
So when Alma went from India to Java to Taiwan, she basically went on two sides of an equilateral triangle. India and Taiwan are north of the equator, and Java is south of it.
