Atlanta Aug. 31, 1932.
Dear Pickle,
Special Eclipse Number.
We spent the first part of the day getting Billy's telescope ready for the eclipse. We had left a piece of pipe for Mr. Barber to bend. We went around this morning to get it, and found it bent and cut off so short that it was useless. Luckily he was at home and got another piece and bent it while we waited. We bought our lunch at GR market on the way back. Then we fitted the mounting to the block and took a camera lens for an eye piece and finally got it to work just after the the eclipse started. At the beginning the eye piece was so high that you had to stand on a chair to see. At the end it was just about right standing on the ground. About the middle of the eclipse we changed eyepieces using one from my field glasses. The mirror was not silvered but does not need to be since there is too much light reflected even from plain glass. Billy tried to silver a diagonal mirror yesterday but each time the silver rubbed right off so that it could not be polished. We used it to-day without a diagonal mirror looking straight into the concave mirror.
We also looked at the eclipse with my field glasses. It was much easier to see that way. Mrs. Davenport was over and looked through both the field glasses and the telescope.
Margaret has gone to the Fox with some girl from camp. I am to get her at 5:45. Billy has gone down to Scout Headquarters. He has to turn in merit badges or something of the sort before the month is over.
We are having some hot days. I suppose you are too.
I will try to get a letter written to Mother to-morrow. I think that will be my last chance.
Nothing new in the apartment situation except that the paper said that there had been only 1/2 the usual number of moving permits. I think that means that a great many are still looking, like the Ervins, but staying on for a while.
It is 5:30 and I must leave.
With lots of love to all,
Daddy.

1.
Dear Pickle,
I don't know why Kay was called Pickle.
2.
Special Eclipse Number.
Kay is an aspiring reporter, and Will writes his letter accordingly. Here's Wikipedia on the eclipse:
A total solar eclipse occurred at the Moon's descending node of orbit between Wednesday, August 31 and Thursday, September 1, 1932,[1] with a magnitude of 1.0257.
and:
Times (UTC)
Greatest eclipse 20:03:41
UTC would be Greenwich Mean Time, and since the US was on daylight savings time, 20:03 UTC would be 16:03, or 2:03 PM, Eastern time.
2.
We spent the first part of the day getting Billy's telescope ready for the eclipse.
Billy made a telescope - see: During the last weekend I finished the telescope that I have been making with some help from Roger and Daddy.
But that later was written several months after this letter, so either the telescope in this letter is a different one, or else I read the date of the 1933 letter incorrectly.
