August 18th.

Dear Will:

I am enclosing a pome which we found in the Tribune.

I meant to tell you the other day that although Roger may look more like Kathleen than like you, he is taking after you very strongly in his figure and his tastes.  He is strong for beans and blueberries.  He sometimes almost goes to sleep at dinner but he can always be roused by the mention of blueberries.  He hasn't had pie yet but when he does!!!  We have had blueberry cake a great deal and he is devoted to it.  As for beans I plunged him in the quiet tears of a great grief (not the loud ones of rage) when I gave him the juice from the baked beans and did not give him any beans after having promised him beans.  I almost crawled in apology.

You should see Roger in the water on a warm day when the tide is low.  He will lie flat on his tum and kick and then will put his nose in until it touches and will lay his cheek in and let the water lap it.  Yesterday he sat down beside me and ducked my head way under.  When the water is shallow he is much more venturesome, especially if it is warm, he isn't keen on the cold water.  Miss Turner took some good pictures of the children in the water and we got the first prints yesterday.  I hope to order some more to-day.

Mother's birthday letter came the day after but she was very glad to get it.  You do not seem to be strong on the birthdays.  Did you forget Kathleen's?  She doesn't seem to be keen on having it celebrated but I think it is better for the children to celebrate it.  We did not have a cake so we used a doughnut with a candle in it.

Billy and Pickle helped me make the cinder path Thursday.  You may think that a joke but they really did carry a lot of cinders from the pile by the street.  Pickle used her little sand pail but used a full sized coal shovel to fill it, the shovel was bigger than she is.

The ages of Will's children in the summer of 1923 were:
  • Maggie (Margaret): 10
  • Billy: 6
  • Kathleen/Kay/Pickle: 4
  • Roger: 2 1/2

Mama Margaret turned 79 on August 15, 1923.  It was her last birthday, as it turned out.
Kathleen turned 35 on Auguat 11, 1923.

Miss Turner took some good pictures of the children in the water and we got the first prints yesterday.
Abby Turner taught at Mount Holyoke.  I can't remember if she was a professor or instructor or what, and I can't remember her field.  I've sort-of added her to the Non-family page for South Hadley folks on this website.

​Billy and Pickle helped me make the cinder path Thursday.
The cinder path gets mentions here and there.  I keep thinking it sounds messy, but Google AI tells me:
