WIRES TO BE RAISED
Above Big Sandy River To Permit Operation of Boat Line.
Colonel William P. Stokey, officer in charge of Cincinnati District No. 2, Corps of Engineers, yesterday issued orders to approximately 40 telephone, telegraph, power and coal companies along the Big Sandy River to remove or raise their wires strung across the Big Sandy and file immediately applications for permits.
This action was taken following a report from a newly-organized boat line plying between Ashland and Pikeville, Ky., that their boats could not navigate the river because of the wires, some of which are high tension. Investigation developed that none of the companies responsible for the stringing of the wires had obtained permission from the Government so to do, and that the wires had been strung so low as to interfere with navigation of the stream by steamers.
The new line is the first to attempt navigation of the Big Sandy since 1902, it is said. Colonel Stokey announced that all of the wires would be required to be raised to a point 75 feet above low-water.
