Knitting socks for the troops and getting Grandpa's old surveying instruments down from the attic. World War I sounds like such a simple, homespun war - aside from the merchants of death, that is. I wonder if the Berlin newspapers were asking if anybody had a Zeppelin or two in their garage that they would like to get rid of.

Uncle Sam in Need of Surveying Instruments; Can You Help Him Out?
Surveying instruments, especially plane tables and alidades, are needed for war work. Citizens who have surveying instruments which they are willing to offer the Government at reasonable prices, are invited to do so.
Col. W. P. Stokey, department engineer at Fort Sam Houston, is in receipt of information from the chief of engineers at Washington, D. C., saying that surveying instruments are needed. The chief of engineers is of the opinion that there are a great many patriotic citizens now owning instruments who would be willing to offer them to the Army and has authorized Colonel Stokey to receive offers for the sale to the Government of needed instruments.
The offers should state the kind, type and catalogue number of the instrument, original cost, purchase price and present condition, together with the lowest cash price for which it is offered delivered at Fort Sam Houston. They should also state where the instrument can be inspected. Offers should be addressed to the department engineer, Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

Wikipedia says:
An alidade (/ˈæ.lɪ.deɪd/) (archaic forms include alhidade, alhidad, alidad) or a turning board is a device that allows one to sight a distant object and use the line of sight to perform a task.
But of course you already knew that.
